CHEERS: CHRISTMAS CHEERS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar. In this episode, as Christmas approaches, the gang finds themselves unexpected touched by the repeated TV airings of "It's a Wonderful Life." Cliff collects food for the needy, hoping to win a vacation by amassing the highest number of canned goods, though Frasier is characteristically cynical about the holiday. Rebecca returns from the company Christmas party and Sam is annoyed to learn that she intends to have them work on Christmas Eve, though Carla and Woody, who opts not to visit Indiana, are unfazed. As Sam decorates the bar, Woody realizes that he is homesick after all and Norm is revealed to be a store Santa. Carla, impatient to go come, exchanges gifts with Woody and Sam, and Sam is taken aback to learn that they bought presents for Rebecca as well, and he runs out to find her something. Frasier and Lilith arrive with their presents for everyone, and Cliff returns, annoyed at having lost the contest, but is elated when Woody comes up with two more cans, making him the winner after all.
A frantic Sam discovers that all of the stores are closed, but encounters an "angelic" stewardess, Tracy, who offers to share her purchases with him. He opts to give Rebecca a pair of earmuffs, and is intrigued when he notices the sexy items that Tracy has purchased for herself. Back at the bar, Norm arrives with several friends from his "Santa class," and Sam arrives with Tracy. Rebecca gives her friends gifts, though they realize that they are all items from corporate, and when Sam gives her his present, she is shocked to find that it is diamond earrings, as Sam grabbed the wrong package from Tracy. Rebecca considers giving them back, as they are an inappropriate gift from an employee, but eventually decides to keep them, forcing Sam to write Tracy a large check. She also invites Sam over for dinner, meaning that he cannot continue his evening with Tracy after all. Woody ends up bonding with Tracy over their families' traditional Christmases, and as the inebriated Santas leave the bar, they spot an unfamiliar Kris Kringle and wonder if he might just be the real thing. Frasier rediscovers his Christmas spirit and everyone sings carols together, settling in for yet another viewing of "It's A Wonderful Life," though they are briefly interrupted by news of Cliff's antics at the airport. Commercials deleted.
