CHEERS: SAM AT ELEVEN (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar.

In this episode, Sam tosses Harry out as he attempts another one of his classic grifts on Coach. Popular local sportscaster Dave Richards stops by to flirt – unsuccessfully – with Diane and ask longtime pal Sam to give an interview on his show. Everyone else encourages Sam to go along with it, though Diane privately suggests that "where-are-they-now" interviews can be depressing. Sam balks at the idea that viewers will pity him in his post-fame life, though Dave admits to Carla that Sam was far from his first choice.

Harry tricks Norm out of $10 as Coach and Carla offer "Mayday" Malone some tips. The interview, conducted in the bar, commences as Sam launches into the lively story of a particularly memorable game. Learning that hotheaded tennis star John McEnroe has just become available, however, Dave rushes from the bar, leaving an embarrassed Sam behind. Diane urges Sam to "lash out" and release his feelings about the humiliating incident, but Sam declares that it has "put a period" on his professional career once and for all. Undeterred, Diane encourages him to look to the future and "just go for it," leading Sam to plant a kiss on her; she reacts with instinctive violence. Startled, Sam apologizes for the momentary lapse and assures her that he will soon recover from Dave's insult. Diane requests the end of the dramatic story as Harry continues his tricks out in the bar. Commercials deleted.
