CHEERS: A DIMINISHED REBECCA WITH A SUSPENDED CLIFF (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar.

Woody is visited by his cousin Russell from Florida, who is in Boston recovering from a recent breakup with his longtime girlfriend. Russell soon proves himself to be a talented musician, and Rebecca suggests that Sam hire him as the bar’s pianist. Cliff receives a notice informing him about a change in postman uniforms, although he is unwilling to go along with it and is reported to his supervisor by a fellow postman, Twitchell. Russell proves to be popular at Cheers and soon indicates that he has romantic feelings towards Rebecca. The others at Cheers are somewhat amused by Russell’s case of “puppy love,” and Rebecca sees no cause for concern. Russell dedicates a song to Rebecca, and that night she drives him back to his motel and he reveals that he is obsessed with her, much to her embarrassment and fear. The next day he leaves the bar to look for Rebecca, although she is hiding from him and emerges when he is gone. Woody reveals that Russell has always had an obsessive personality and goes overboard whenever he gets fixated on something or someone.

A postal inspector arrives and threatens Cliff with suspension if he doesn’t agree to wear the new uniform. Cliff reluctantly concedes and heads into the bathroom to change. While he is in there, it is revealed that the entire thing is a prank: Twitchell had his brother-in-law pose as the postal inspector and they have given Cliff an outfit of their own design in order to humiliate him. Russell returns and Rebecca takes him into the office to talk with him about his behavior. She asserts that she is not deserving of his lavish attentions and that she’s not the right woman for him. Russell offers an apology and says that he is a better person for having met her. Once he leaves, however, Rebecca realizes that she actually enjoyed his attentions and feels lonely without them. Cliff emerges wearing a ridiculous costume, although it appears that he actually likes it and heads out to work wearing it. Rebecca decides to go talk to Russell at his motel room, but discovers that he has moved on and now idolizes Carla. Commercials deleted.
