CHEERS: ACHILLES HILL (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar. In this episode, Woody goes to extremes to save Sam's preferred parking spot, and Carla is horrified when a "cursed" foosball table reappears in the bar, believing that it brings misery and misfortune to all who play on it. Sam is annoyed by a visit from John Hill, the snobbish owner of Melville's, who reminds him that his rent for the pool room is overdue. Sam is then pleased to meet Hill's attractive daughter Valerie, and he immediately decides to date her in order to annoy her father. He takes her to dinner at Melville's and exaggeratedly flirts with her in front of Hill, and Hill quickly breaks down and begs him not to "take" his only daughter, promising that he can have the Cheers space – and the parking spot – rent-free if he promises not to see her again.
Sam swiftly ends things with Valerie, sure that he has scored an excellent bargain, but then decides that he wants her back. Rebecca suggests that he merely wants women whom he cannot have, like Rebecca herself, while elsewhere Carla's dark predictions seem to come true when Frasier gets his hand caught in the foosball table. Valerie agrees to carry on dating Sam in secret, aware that her father dislikes him, and Carla invites a priest to the bar to "save" Frasier. Sam and Valerie prepare to sneak out for a weekend away, but Hill catches them in the act and Valerie admits the truth, leaving Hill no choice but to offer his blessing. Valerie, however, decides that she is no longer interested in the "greasy bartender" now that the relationship is not forbidden, and Hill smugly tears up their agreement and announces that he is doubling Sam's rent, much to his frustration. Commercials deleted.
