FOUR GUMBY EPISODES {TOY FUN, MIRROR LAND, HIDDEN VALLEY, CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT} (TV)
Summary
This contains four productions featuring Gumby, the "little green guy" who -- with his faithful pony, Pokey -- stars in stop-motion clay animation shorts that debuted in 1953. Pokey's introduction segues into the first episode, "Toy Fun." It begins as a Robert Robot toy menaces Pokey, who cowers until discovering that Gumby is at the controls. The two play with other toys, including a miniature fire truck's ladder, a kaleidoscope, and dollhouse furniture. Gumby then bakes frosted cookies in an Easy-Bake oven, much to Pokey's delight. In the second episode, "Mirror Land," Gumby's mother, Gumba, sends him to get groceries after giving him a fifty-cent piece. While riding his scooter, Gumby drops the coin, which roles right through a strange mirror -- leading to another dimension. Gumby enters it to find the fifty cents and sees another version of himself. He's instructed that everything must be done backward in the topsy-turvy world. Finally, a clumsily driven truck leads to Gumby's discovery of his missing coin. In the third episode, "Hidden Valley," Gumby and Pokey's car overheats, prompting them to get water from a nearby "magic spring." The water subsequently makes the car fly as they search for the legendarily elusive Hidden Valley. Ignoring Pokey's warnings of pending trouble, Gumby lands the car in a spot that he believes to be their destination, then sets up his movie camera. He's interrupted when a talking brachiosaurus directs them back to their car. As other dinosaurs join in for a group photo, a tyrannosaurus crashes the scene and sends all the creatures scurrying. Forgetting to grab the camera, Gumby and Pokey dash back to the flying car. Though the monster grabs a rear tire, the pair escape back to their own world. In the fourth episode, "Candidate for President," Gumby watches convention coverage on TV with Pokey as he hears himself being nominated for president. Gumby's pals -- Prickle the dragon and Goo the mermaid -- then go to Mount Rushmore to learn about a good president's qualities. There, they check out the likenesses of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt. Later, the pair enter a book about Washington and observe as he crosses the Delaware River. They ask for Washington's advice, then enter a book about Lincoln, who is found splitting rails. After watching Jefferson write the Declaration of Independence, they borrow Roosevelt's "big stick." Returning to Gumby's house, Prickle and Goo read their list of presidential instructions, after which Pokey offers some comments of his own.
