FUTURAMA: THE LUCK OF THE FRYISH (TV)

Summary

One in this satirical animated series set in New York City in the thirty-first century, when aliens rule the earth. In this episode, in old New York, Fry is born to vaguely disinterested parents. They name him “after those screwdrivers,” and his older brother Yancy is understandably jealous. In the present, Fry and the others go to the racetrack, and Fry suffers several losses, despite his prayers to “Horse God.” Bender, however, wins big, possibly due to his covert drugging of several of the horses. Fry continues to experience bad luck, losing his last dollar and being struck by lightning. In the past, a young Fry plays basketball with Yancy and discovers a seven-leaf clover, which he keeps as a good-luck charm. In the future, Fry decides that he must recover the clover, which he hid in his former home in old New York, to end his bad luck, and Bender and Leela accompany him. He remembers the time in which Yancy stole his routine for a breakdancing competition, but his clover helped him master an impressive move and win. He finds his rundown home in the underground wasteland that is now Brooklyn, and finds the safe in which he hid the clover inside the sleeve of “The Breakfast Club” soundtrack, but is shocked to find that the clover is gone, and realizes Yancy must have stolen it after he was frozen.

As they walk through old New York, Fry is shocked to see a statue of his brother bearing the name “Philip J. Fry” and stating that Yancy was the first man on Mars. Fry is furious that his brother stole his name and his life as well as his clover after he vanished. Professor Farnsworth finds a film about Yancy, which explains that he was a highly accomplished and lucky man who achieved great fame and prestige, and was eventually buried with his lucky clover. Angry at his brother’s deception, Fry decides to rob his grave, and in a flashback, Yancy is shown to have taken the clover on his wedding day, which he is sad to celebrate without his brother. Bender, Leela and Fry arrive at the graveyard and find Yancy’s grave, but as they dig, Fry notices the inscription on the tomb and realizes that the famous “Philip J. Fry” buried there was in fact his nephew, Yancy’s son, whom he named after his missing uncle as a tribute. Bender recovers the clover, but touched by his brother’s gesture, Fry returns it to the grave and sheds a tear for his lost family. Commercials deleted.
