HILL STREET BLUES: DOUBLE JEOPARDY {A.K.A. DRESSED TO KILL} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of police dramas about the personal and professional lives of the officers of Hill Street Station, a precinct located in a run-down urban area. In this episode, the cops continue their investigation of Ralph Macafee, who has accused LaRue of accepting bribes. An unusually well-dressed Belker arrives, admitting that he has a date later, but he is then roped into "Operation Duckling," in which a number of male officers are dressed as female decoys in the hopes of catching a serial rapist. Esterhaus talks to Faye and confesses that, despite his proclaimed loyalty to his wife, he has fallen for an "insatiable" older woman, whom she quickly deduces to be Grace Gardner.

LaRue loses his temper with his new boss at the car dealership and ends up quitting on the spot, while elsewhere Goldblume is distressed when he is called to a crime scene at which a 20-year-old man has jumped to his death from a building. The man's sister sadly explains that he had been having financial troubles, adding that mean-spirited onlookers encouraged him to "do it." Departing the scene, Goldblume gets a flat tire and, when harassed by some mischievous locals, ends up angrily pulling his service weapon on them. Furillo and Washington visit Maureen Macafee, who seems to be entirely in the dark about her husband's potential crimes, and Macafee is outraged to learn of the encounter, demanding that his wife be left out of their conflict.

Back at the precinct, a deeply shaken Goldblume vents his troubles to Alf, explaining that he dislikes even loading his gun, let alone pulling it out on civilians. Grace visits Esterhaus and, having enjoyed their liaison, invites him to a dinner party, though he seems uncertain about continuing the affair. Washington tails Macafee, and he and Furillo are shocked to find that Macafee has a secret second wife and two additional children. He pleads with Furillo to keep his damning secret, but Furillo sternly orders him to turn himself in and finally clear LaRue's name. Operation Duckling is a success and the rapist is captured, though Bates is hurt in the scuffle and ends up in the hospital, and LaRue returns to the precinct, having received a scolding and six months' probation from Internal Affairs. Esterhaus admits to Furillo that he is hopelessly torn between his two women, and back at home, Davenport warns Furillo that the troublemaking LaRue is a "time bomb" who is sure to find himself in hot water again.
