REMINGTON STEELE: STEELE CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS (TV)
Summary
One in this detective series about private investigator Laura Holt, whose Remington Steele Detective Agency fails until she pairs up with a suave stranger claims to be the fictitious Remington Steele. In this episode, at his college homecoming, Murphy is confronted by an eccentric woman named Annie who claims to have known him from school and says that she thinks her missing friend Dan was attacked, having heard screams outside as he came to meet her. Murphy is baffled and doubts there is a case, but they soon spot Dan’s body hanging from a flagpole outside a nearby ROTC building. Murphy calls Laura for assistance and is annoyed when Remington tags along, particularly when Remington claims that he can solve the case all by himself, saying that it cannot have been a suicide. He makes a wager with Laura: an explanation of a year’s worth of his past or a weekend in Paris together. Laura then interviews Annie, who realizes that Dan’s body was found exactly where her friend Tom Donovan died ten years ago: she and several other radicals broke into the ROTC building to set off fireworks as a counterculture statement, but there was an explosion and Tom was killed. Remington searches Dan’s apartment and finds a book on poltergeists, and then observes doors slamming on their own and blood pouring from the faucets. At the homecoming event, Laura talks to the homecoming queen, Jillian, and Remington arrives in a panic, claiming a ghost murdered Dan, which she doubts. Murphy engages a professor to distract Remington and they leave. Annie takes them to see another member of the group from the night Tom was killed, a paranoid man named Hector. Laura maintains that there is a “logical explanation” for everything, and Hector tells his version of the story. Just then, they all see what appears to be Tom’s ghost and they run for it, and Hector disappears in the panic. Remington soon discovers Hector’s body hanging from the same flagpole. He soon joins Laura and the others and brags that he has solved the case by finding a nametag at the crime scene, but the name on it is “Tom Donovan” and he is disturbed to learn that Tom is dead. Laura comes across another man from Annie’s group, Nat Shavers, who admits that he too saw the ghost and reveals that Tom was actually planning to plant a bomb, not harmless fireworks. Remington then learns that Dan’s apartment was rigged to project a ghostly image and run fake blood from the taps, and he finds an earring lodged in the machinery. Annie and Laura are suddenly attacked by a masked figure, and they and the others search across campus. Laura and Remington discover tunnels in the sewers and explore, taking a moment to flirt and ponder ending the bet and receiving their respective “prizes.” Suddenly, someone shoots at them, and when they escape, they discover Lynette, the last member of the group, who explains that Tom intended for them all to die in the bomb blast as martyrs for the revolution. She knocked him out, changed the timer on the bomb and led the others to safety before the explosion, but swears she did not kill Dan or Hector. Stumped, the detectives wonder who had motive and access, and soon reexamine a photo of Tom and his sister, whom they realize to be Jillian, the homecoming queen. Remington matches the earring he found to one of hers, and they catch her at a reunion event, where she angrily says the others murdered her brother and she waited for the ten-year event to exact revenge. Later, Remington and Laura banter about who solved the case first, and kiss again as they consider their Paris voyage. Commercials deleted.
