Summary

In this episode, Mary admits that she is in desperate need of a raise and sits down with Lou to deliver her carefully prepared speech; he surprises her by stating that he also wishes for a pay boost and suggests that they should appeal to upper management together. They head upstairs to meet with stammering new executive Mel Price, declaring that they are a team of vital assets and will quit if they are not fairly compensated. Price turns out to be a tough negotiator and refuses the raise, informing them that he will quickly replace them both if need be.
After two weeks of defiant unemployment, a nervous Mary tells Lou that she wishes to surrender and renegotiate, particularly when Murray stops by and admits that the station is doing fine without them. Lou, however, stands his ground, explaining that he does not ever want to feel "owned" by his bosses. Ted and Georgette then visit Mary; Georgette forces Mary to accept a loan to pay her rent, though Ted is less than thrilled with his wife's generosity. Mary tells Lou that she plans to haggle with Price with or without him, and he accompanies her back to the office. Price explains that there is only a finite amount left in the budget and leaves it to them to divvy up a $5,000 increase. Lou, of course, desires the entire amount for himself, but he agrees to Mary's suggestion of a 2,000/3,000 split, despite feeling that he "got rooked." Commercials deleted.
