WILL & GRACE: OH DAD, POOR DAD, HE'S KEPT ME IN THE CLOSET AND I'M SO SAD (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about the friendship between Will Truman, a gay lawyer, and Grace Adler, a straight interior decorator.
In this episode, Will is thrilled by a visit from his lovable dad George, which depresses Jack and Grace, whose fathers are less than ideal. George gives Will a gift and then mentions that he is receiving an award from his company, but modestly urges Will and Grace not to bother attending. Nonetheless, they decide to surprise him by appearing at the dinner. Jack mopes about his unknown biological father, who had a one-night stand with his mother at a party in the '60s. Karen then tells Grace that she has tracked down his dad, John Marshall, and intends to "create a moment" and surprise Jack by introducing them. George is flustered when Will and Grace arrive at the dinner, and Will then discovers that George has told his workmates that the two of them are married in order to hide the fact that Will is gay. Will, angry, vows to find the reason behind his father's lie; Grace enjoys the charade, spinning a yarn about their three children.
Jack meets John at a restaurant and the two hit it off, sharing similar shallow world views; when Karen arrives, she is horrified to learn that Jack believes it to be a setup. She explains that John is his father and Jack is disgusted. John then dispels this notion, saying that he, too, is gay and has never been with a woman. Despite the "creepy" factor, Jack decides to continue their evening together. At the dinner, Will confronts George, who admits that he lied simply because he hated the idea of close-minded people judging his son. Will realizes that his father is "just a guy," flawed but with good intentions. When George accepts his award, however, he outs a slightly embarrassed Will to everyone during his long-winded speech, happily stating that he is proud of his son and loves him. Grace plays along to the very end. Commercials deleted.
