Summary
The sixth season premiere in this comedy series about Mary Richards, a single career woman working in a television newsroom.
In this episode, everyone is curious about Lou's lunch date with his ex-wife Edie; they return to the office to announce "the greatest news in the world": that Edie is getting remarried. Lou drops his feigned happiness as he rambles to bartender Charlie, and Mary tries to comfort him despite his grumpy requests to be left alone. Ted compares Edie to his childhood yo-yo in a surprisingly wise analogy. Edie soon invites both Mary and Lou to the wedding, though Lou refuses to accept.
On the day before the ceremony, Lou locks himself in his office and is soon visited by his daughter, Janey. She pleads with him to attend, assuring him that her stepfather-to-be, Howard, is merely "average," and he finally agrees to "drop by." Mary suggests that Lou "can't take it," and Lou agrees but vows to keep his promise to his daughter; the two attend the ceremony together. After observing Howard's impending baldness, Lou sweetly bids a final farewell to Edie, reducing Mary to tears. At the bar, Murray and Ted arrive to entertain the mopey pair. Commercials deleted.
