DREW CAREY SHOW, THE: BANANAS I & II {SIXTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedies starring stand-up comedian Drew Carey as a single guy who attempts to juggle his romantic endeavors and his menial job at a Cleveland department store, while still maintaining his sense of humor. Drew is appointed to the position of store manager of a new women's clothing store opening across the street from Winfred-Louder. Mimi is indignant, since she worked on the project and feels that she would make a better manager, but Nigel placates her by offering her Drew's old job in human resources, pointing out that she would be in a prime position to abuse her newfound authority. She takes the job, much to Drew's surprise. Soon the task of getting the women's store ready for opening takes its toll on Drew, not helped by his lack of sleep. He presses on, feeling that the position of store manager will be worth all the stress. Meanwhile, Lewis and Oswald get a job at a fireworks factory, enticed by the possibility of getting a free unlimited supply of fireworks. As opening day for the new store closes in, Drew runs into problems with his workers, and is disgusted to learn that Mimi is abusing her newfound position for personal gain. Soon his workers abandon him, citing union regulations, leaving Drew alone in the unfinished store. He notices several strange occurrences, such as light bulbs spontaneously bursting and objects being overturned. He flees the store when the mannequins apparently move of their own accord and surround him. Lewis accidentally singes off his eyebrows while playing with roman candles. Drew tells them and Kate about his encounter at the store. They attribute it to lack of sleep and lull him into taking a nap. Before they leave, Oswald and Lewis play a prank on the sleeping Drew by dressing him in a tinfoil crown and brassiere. Drew is awoken by what sounds like talking parrots mocking him. He goes outside and lobs firecrackers in the air to scare them away, but a pair of nearby policemen is drawn to the sounds and hold Drew at gunpoint. When he asks for one of their guns to shoot the birds, they arrest him and place him in a mental asylum. Drew explains to Dr. Herschlag, one of the doctors at the asylum, about the stress he's experienced lately and the explanation for his behavior. He convinces Dr. Herschlag that he's not insane and they make preparations to release him. However, Mimi visits Drew in his padded cell and admits that she was the one who manufactured his hallucinations. She explains that she merely hoped to make Drew so stressed that he would quit and she could usurp his store manager position, but is pleased that her actions have landed him in a mental institution instead. She taunts him and Drew attempts to strangle her; Dr. Herschlag calls in orderlies to restrain and sedate Drew, now believing that he is insane. Soon Oswald, Kate, and Lewis wonder where Drew is. They find one of the parrots Mimi used to fabricate Drew's hallucinations and begin to ask around the police station and local hospitals in search of Drew. Meanwhile, Drew convinces another patient, Earl, to help him dial Nigel on the phone to try to explain the situation. However, Drew's plans are ruined when Earl accidentally knocks him unconscious. Mimi convinces Nigel that Drew is absent due to overdosing on drugs, and he makes her the store manager to fill in for him. Drew tries to call again, but Mimi picks up this time and taunts him before hanging up. He must be restrained by orderlies again when he starts yelling out of frustration. Lewis and Oswald find the mental institution where Drew is being held, but are not allowed to visit him, as they are not family members. Instead they admit themselves as patients to the facility in order to see Drew, although Drew points out that this prevents them from getting him out of there. Drew makes several attempts to escape, all ending with failure. He devises a plan with Oswald to sneak him out inside a laundry cart. Meanwhile, Kate returns to Drew's house alone and hears a message he left for her on his answering machine asking her to get a van and aid in the escape attempt. Lewis decides to aid the escape plan by constructing an improvised bomb to blow a hole in the wall. The bomb goes off and everyone piles into Kate's van except for Drew, who is restrained by a concerned Earl. Kate drives off, assured by Lewis and Oswald that Drew is in the van. Drew runs out of the mental ward and into the street. Lewis, Kate, and Oswald arrive at the women's store opening, where a fashion show is in progress. They decide to remain there for the time being. Drew enters and Nigel yells at him for his disappearance. When Drew learns that Mimi took over the duty of store manager while he was gone, his mind snaps and everyone starts looking like Mimi to him. Now genuinely insane, Drew is readmitted into the insane asylum, where Dr. Herschlag says he is slowly losing touch with reality. Drew's psychosis is so extensive that even his own reflection looks like Mimi to him. The episode ends as the winner of the April Fool's Day contest is announced, and Earl claims that he can somehow perceive the episode's credits. Includes commercials.
