NYPD BLUE: FLIGHT OF FANCY (TV)

Summary

One in this series of rough-edged police dramas about the cases and private lives of the detectives and station house personnel of a Manhattan precinct.

In this episode, Sipowicz and Sorensen attempt to avoid their incumbent new lieutenant, Dalto, and they encounter a would-be robber in the midst of a crime. They determine that the man, Freddy, has committed other burglaries to fund his drug habit. Freddy reluctantly takes them to the scenes of his past crimes, hoping to reduce his jail time. Dalto continues alienating the squad by enforcing her needlessly strict policies. McDowell tells Fancy that she wishes to transfer rather than work under her, though Fancy tells her that "things work themselves out." Sensing that Sipowicz and Sorensen are not impressed by his "honesty," Freddy reveals that he knows the location of a dead body, and he leads them to the vacant lot where a young woman's burned corpse is hidden.

Fancy meets with Bass and "calls in a favor," and Sipowicz and Sorensen demand answers from Freddy about the dead body. He tells them that the girl, Alyssa Santos, was a local teen junkie and that a violent drug dealer named Antoine is likely guilty of her murder. Alyssa's aunt and uncle, Ramon and Tania, soon arrive and explain that their niece ran away from the group home in which they placed her because of her "incorrigible" behavior. Learning that she is dead, Tania tearfully states that Alyssa's grim history of childhood sexual abuse caused her personal problems, adding that they were advised by an Officer Baxter not to bother filing a missing person's report. Gibson questions Sipowicz about his possible romantic connection with Gibson's niece Cynthia. As Dalto prepares to "reorganize" the squad, she receives a call from the chief of detectives. Though Sipowicz is sure that Dalto's "double-minority clout" will protect her from any consequences, Dalto angrily reveals that she has been transferred again. She guesses correctly that Fancy had something to do with the change, but Fancy calmly refuses to engage in an argument.

Antoine is hauled in for questioning as McDowell questions Alyssa's case worker, Sara Fisher, who reveals that Ramon, too, had been abusing his niece, causing her to run away. She states that Alyssa would not allow her to investigate the matter, however, and Fisher quickly grows defensive when McDowell castigates her for not doing more. Sipowicz expresses his doubts about Dalto's new replacement, Tony Rodriguez. When the detectives re-interview Freddy, he states that he actually saw Antoine strangle Alyssa and burn her body. Jones and Medavoy question Baxter about his strange advice to the Santoses, and Antoine is dismissive of the detectives' questions. He states that Alyssa was "the village bike" and was involved with any number of seedy men. Jones and Medavoy then confront Ramon about his abuse of Alyssa. He indirectly confirms the accusations, stating that she was "not even acting like a kid," but he swears that he did not murder her. Antoine then reveals that he had a fling with "Crazy Freddy's" sister, leading to an altercation between the two, and the detectives realize that Freddy fingered Antoine solely because of his grudge. When they confront him with his lies, Freddy finally admits that he himself murdered Alyssa in a drug-fueled rage. Rodriguez asks Fancy about the detectives, and Fancy admits that Sipowicz is "unique" but a skilled detective. Rodriguez politely declines his invitation to his going-away party, but asks Irvin to buy the group a round on him. At the party, several of the detectives offer affectionate parting words to their boss, and Fancy thanks them for their loyalty and hard work. Includes commercials and promos.
