LAVERNE & SHIRLEY: SHIRLEY AND THE OLDER MAN {FOURTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about two young working women, following their humorous adventures from the 1950s through the 1960s.

In this episode, Laverne takes off to Chicago to see her pregnant cousin while Shirley cleans the apartment. Shirley then meets fiftysomething Monroe Harrison in the park and instantly befriends the rich gentleman. Edna marvels at how distinguished the man is, though Shirley insists they are just friends. That night, Monroe arrives to pick up Shirley for a date to the opera and Lenny and Squiggy immediately butt in, leaving Shirley embarrassed at their candid comments. After the opera, Shirley and Monroe discuss their differences and Monroe details why he likes Shirley. Monroe reveals that his adult daughter, Adele, wants to meet her, too, and a dinner is arranged for the following evening. Then, Carmine drops by, angry that Shirley is going out with some “decrepit, old geezer.”

Shirley tells Carmine that she can’t go out with him the next night due to her dinner plans, and he leaves in a huff. Meanwhile, Adele assumes Shirley is after her father’s money, hatching a plan to expose Shirley by having her arrive an hour before Monroe and getting her drunk. At dinner, Mother Harrison joins Adele and Shirley. Shirley quickly shows her lowbrow ways as Adele plies her with expensive wines. Soon, Shirley is talking about Laverne and making a huge mess atop the table, right before Monroe comes home. Monroe is upset that his daughter intentionally got Shirley drunk in order to show her “true colors.” Then, Carmine arrives, incensed at the scene he encounters, throwing a punch at Monroe that inadvertently hits Shirley.

Afterward, Carmine laments that maybe Shirley is better off with Monroe than a “bozo” like him, but Shirley confirms that Carmine is the man she loves. Finally, Laverne comes back to the apartment with news about her cousin’s baby. Commercials deleted.
