LAVERNE & SHIRLEY: GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN NOT INNOCENT (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about two young working women, following their humorous adventures from the 1950s through the 1960s.

In this episode, Frank and Carmine go to a football game in Green Bay as Shirley helps Laverne find a dress for the policeman’s ball, taking her to a pricey store, Carlyle’s. There, snooty salesman Mr. Clark treats Laverne and Shirley with disdain and says he has to deal with “real customers.” When they go to leave, a store detective finds a scarf which Laverne accidentally put in her purse, surprising her. Laverne is taking to a downtown holding cell where she is forced to deal with some hardened prisoners. Later, Shirley arrives to drop off some supplies from home for her friend. However, Laverne is trying to put on a tough façade to deal with her bunkmates. Then, Laverne’s cop friend Norman arrives trying to help, explaining that bail is set at $500.

Next, Laverne has to participate in a line-up of suspects, and is almost mistakenly identified as a gas station robber. Meanwhile, a tipsy Shirley hangs with Edna, sad about Laverne’s status, praying to God for the bail money. Then, Lenny and Squiggy arrive, pitching in some dollars they have earned by trick-or-treating for UNICEF. Later, Shirley agrees to have dinner with Mr. Clark so he’ll drop the charges against Laverne. However, when Laverne won’t admit her guilt to Mr. Clark, he gets incensed, causing an argument with Shirley. When Shirley threatens to go to the press, he finally drops the charges, on the condition that Laverne never returns to Carlyle’s. Includes commercials.
