ST. ELSEWHERE: TIME HEALS: PART 2 (TV)

Summary

One in this medical drama series set in St. Eligius hospital in Boston. In the second half of this two-part episode, in 1935, young "Donnie" Westphall and his father chat with the friendly Father McCabe, and Donnie watches as a young man, Patrick, is brought in to the hospital after a serious accident at the mill. Morrison waits desperately for news of Pete as Meredith interviews Auschlander, who tells her that he was hired by McCabe in 1945 after serving in the Navy. Younger Auschlander arrives to find McCabe scolding a teenage pickpocket, and he immediately begins flirting with a nurse, Katherine. McCabe decides to "knock some sense" into the thief – Westphall – and the boy soon breaks down in anger and grief over the loss of his family. Chandler advises Morrison to search through the basement files for further family history on Terence, and in 1935, young Patrick survives his injuries, telling his worried girlfriend Allyson that his dangerous job is worth the risk in the Depression. In the present, Kevin tells Morrison that Terence stopped loving him because of his sexuality, and Morrison advises him to communicate openly with his father while he still has the time.

In '45, Auschlander tells McCabe about the anti-Semitic treatment he has been receiving, though McCabe urges him to stay at St. Eligius and stand up to bigotry. Auschlander then meets Patrick, also just returned from the service, whose young daughter Sarah has been admitted with polio. In the present, Morrison realizes that Terence too has polio, having received an insufficient vaccination after his sister's death, but tells Helen and Kevin that he is likely to recover fully from it. Young Westphall takes a job as a shoeshine boy at the hospital and talks with Auschlander, and Auschlander finally asks Katherine out. In '85, Westphall accompanies a terrified Morrison to the morgue, though the body he is shown is not Pete's. In '35, young Donnie's family home catches fire, and in '55, younger Craig kisses up to the bullying Dr. Domedion in a rather Ehrlich-like manner, cautioning his fellow intern Westphall not to get too attached to the patients, including little Sarah in her iron lung. In '65, a drunken McCabe tells Auschlander that he has finally been fired from the hospital and reassigned to Arizona for his troublemaking ways, and Craig excitedly tours a new house with a pregnant Ellen, confident that he is soon to be offered a prestigious cardiac position at Boston General.

In the present, Chandler praises Morrison's clever work in diagnosing Terence, and in '35, Donnie's father sadly tells him that his mother and siblings perished in the fire. In '55, Craig panics while performing his first-ever surgery, but Domedion sternly orders him to collect himself and finish the task. Sarah soon dies, and ten years later, Auschlander offers to resign in solidarity with McCabe, but McCabe tells him that he has recommended him to take over the head position when the hospital is sold to the city. Craig is hired by Boston General and urges Westphall to join him and leave the broken-down St. Eligius behind, though Craig finds himself unable to admit the truth of his departure to Domedion. At the fiftieth anniversary party, Westphall makes a speech about the learning experiences of the hospital's many ups and downs over the years, and Auschlander toasts "to the future." Morrison is overjoyed when the police arrive with an unharmed Pete, and Auschlander enjoys a fond memory of Father McCabe as he exits. Commercials deleted.
