DIFF'RENT STROKES {DIFFERENT STROKES}: THE CLUB MEETING (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedies about the family life of wealthy white industrialist Philip Drummond and his adopted African-American sons, Arnold and Willis. In this episode, Willis skips breakfast because he is "down in the dumps," and when Arnold brings him a donut, he explains that he misses his old club and his friends back in Harlem. Arnold points out that they have a good life in the penthouse and have each other as brothers, but Willis says that he still needs his friends sometimes. Arthur tries to entice Willis into a game of basketball, and Willis ends up breaking a clock. The boys worry that Mr. Drummond will react angrily, but he merely tells them to be more careful, and Kimberly reassures them that everything in the house belongs to all of them, as they share everything as a family. The boys quickly warm to the idea that they are "loaded" and Willis calls his friends to join him downtown and have their weekly club meeting at his new home. They soon arrive and meet Mrs. Garrett, and Willis and Arthur, dressed to the nines, proudly show their guests around their fancy new digs. They introduce their friends to Mr. Drummond and Kimberly, though Mr. Drummond privately worries about the boys' behavior and Mrs. Garrett suggests that his wealth has gone to their heads. The club meeting gets underway and the treasurer reveals that they are broke, but Arnold and Willis boast that they have money to contribute. Arnold asks to be made a member, despite being too young, and also suggests that Willis should take over as president, as they are now having their meetings in the penthouse from now on, but the other boys object to their attitudes and decide to oust both of them and leave. Willis realizes that he became too caught up in "making it big" and ostracized his friends, and at Mr. Drummond's encouragement, decides to head uptown and apologize to them, inviting Arnold to be the club's "mascot" once again.
