KATE & ALLIE {KATE AND ALLIE}: ALLIE'S FIRST DATE {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The first in this situation comedy series about Kate McArdle and Allie Lowell, two divorced mothers with conflicting lifestyles who, along with their children, share a New York City apartment. In this episode, Kate and Allie go to see the movie "An Unmarried Woman" again and debate about its message. At home, Allie hangs wallpaper, largely unaided by the children, including Jennie, who is busy on the phone. Kate arrives home and hurries upstairs just as David, her date for the evening, arrives. Allie entertains him while Kate gets ready, explaining that "everybody" lives in the house together. David soon ends up helping Allie with the wallpaper as they share a pleasant chat, after which he leaves with Kate. Allie eavesdrops when Kate returns home that night, but Kate says that she did not ask David in for a nightcap and was somewhat disappointed by the date, knowing that he is not "the one." The women share a drink as Kate explains how she will blow David off when he calls, and Allie marvels at the way men always want a second date with her.

David calls Kate at work and, to her surprise, says that he did not feel any "electricity" either. He then requests to ask out Allie instead, and Kate, though miffed, agrees. Allie is thrilled when she hears his phone message and hurries down to the laundry room to talk with Kate in private, throwing out their neighbor, Roger. Allie is at first distressed to think that she is a "second choice" yet again, but Kate assures her that David prefers her, much to Allie's delight. She decides to go out with him on Wednesday night, when her ex-husband Charles will arrive to pick up the children. Allie attempts to shop for a dress for the date, though Kate is forced to intervene when she picks several boring garments. Later, Kate and Jennie give her some "ground rules" for the evening, and she stalls when Charles arrives early, wanting to ensure that the two men meet. When David arrives, Kate introduces them, and Allie awkwardly attempts to play up the date and make her ex jealous. Once they are at dinner, she ends up talking far too much about her failed relationship with Charles, and David does not enjoy himself. At home, Charles drops the children off again and Kate attempts to talk up David, though he seems uninterested. Allie hides in the basement, not wanting him to know that the date went badly, and when she comes upstairs she admits the truth to Kate, saying that she spoiled it by discussing her divorce. Kate comforts her, saying she was just nervous and it will get easier, and tries to convince her that Charles was indeed green with jealousy over her date. Commercials deleted.
