CAGNEY & LACEY {CAGNEY AND LACEY}: WHO SAYS IT'S FAIR {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas about two policewomen, Chris Cagney and Mary Beth Lacey. Harvey calls Cagney, asking to meet with her without Lacey's knowledge. At the precinct, Cagney and Lacey get a call about a missing eight year-old child named Kevin Taggart and go to investigate. However, they discover Kevin has returned home minutes before their arrival and Eleanor chastises him for not returning from school immediately. The Taggarts are lower-class and Eleanor is a single mother who often works long hours, leaving Kevin on his own much of the time. Afterwards, Cagney meets with Harvey, who reveals that he found a lump on Lacey's breast. Lacey insists it's nothing but Harvey is concerned it may be something serious. The next day, Cagney confronts Lacey about it, believing she may have breast cancer. Lacey insists nothing is wrong and that Harvey is overreacting. She returns home and has a fight with Harvey about him talking to Cagney, asking both of them to stay out of her life. Lacey throws herself into her work and gets another call from Eleanor; this time Kevin is legitimately missing. Cagney and Lacey go to Kevin's school to investigate further, but can't search his locker without a warrant, which will take a day to process. Cagney finds a radio under Kevin's bed which Eleanor can't account for. Cagney believes the radio was stolen and that Eleanor's long absences are negatively affecting Kevin's behavior. When Cagney again attempts to get Lacey to see a doctor, she snaps at her, still unwilling to admit that she may have breast cancer. The next day, they open Kevin's locker and find 200 dollars hidden in one of his sneakers. They find some of Kevin's classmates hanging out at a nearby arcade and question both them and the arcade owner, but can glean no useful information. Eleanor believes that since the Taggarts are poor and African-American, the police are not making a full effort to find Kevin. Cagney angrily refutes this argument, blaming Eleanor's long work hours for Kevin's disappearance. Eleanor counters that she doesn't have the money to leave Kevin with a babysitter, and that to take welfare would be setting a bad example for him. Finally Lacey capitulates and visits a doctor. While in the waiting room, she observes the other people there and notices the brochures about breast cancer. Before the doctor can see her, she runs out and returns home. She tells Harvey that she's frightened of what the future could have in store for her, and that most of all she's afraid of dying or suffering through long, painful treatments. The next day, Cagney gets information from the arcade owner about a teenager named Willie Smoke who Kevin and his friends often accompany. Cagney finds Willie and roughs him up to find out the truth: Willie is using Kevin and his friends as drug mules and Kevin never returned from a delivery. Cagney, Lacey, and the other detectives search the area. Lacey tells Cagney that she went to her doctor after all and that they are running tests. Cagney finds Kevin at the bottom of a long shaft in the ground; he accidentally fell there and has been stuck for several days. While emergency services arrive, Cagney crawls down into the shaft and manages to locate an injured and hypothermic Kevin. With her help, the police manage to retrieve him and save his life. While the 14th Precinct celebrates, Lacey receives a call from her doctor: her test results indicate that she has malignant breast cancer, necessitating that she receive surgery to remove her breast. Lacey is frightened and distraught, but Harvey promises to be there for her. Continued in B:60772. Commercials deleted.
