PARTY OF FIVE: POSITIVE ATTITUDE (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas about five siblings in San Francisco who attempt to raise themselves and cope with life's daily dilemmas after their parents die in a car accident. Julia and Griffin are preparing for their wedding, but Griffin is concerned since a large bike shop chain has set up near his store, and is severely undercutting his prices in a bid to drive him out of business. Bailey is not amused to learn that Sarah's new boyfriend Elliot is coming over, particularly since he has a lengthy reading assignment to finish. Sarah heavily implies that she is planning on having sex with Elliot, thus losing her virginity, but Bailey doesn't seem to understand. Charlie gets his friend Zoe to help Julia and Griffin plan their wedding. Bailey can't concentrate on his reading while Sarah and Elliot have a romantic dinner. After accidentally running into Elliot in the bathroom, Bailey decides to abruptly excuse himself. He can't seem to find a place to read, especially when he narrowly avoids Annie in the laundry room. Dr. Paul Thomas, Kirsten's new husband, challenges Charlie to a game of racquetball, and Charlie starts talking about Nina. During the game Charlie collapses and momentarily loses consciousness. This causes Paul concern and he calls for an ambulance. He's taken to the hospital and examined, and although he insists he is fine a lump is found under his arm. Sarah tells Bailey that Elliot is coming over again, but Bailey still does not understand that she intends to sleep with him. Charlie is released from the hospital, insisting that he is in good condition. He helps Julia plan the wedding with Zoe, although Julia is frustrated that Griffin is too busy managing his shop to help plan the wedding. Charlie receives a call from his doctor about his condition, but chooses to continue insisting to everyone else that he is fine. Bailey finally figures out that Sarah intends to have sex with Elliot and is highly uncomfortable at this prospect. Sarah tries to justify to him why she is making this decision. Julia confronts Griffin over his lack of involvement with the wedding. He assures her he will make an effort to assist, opting not to tell her about his financial troubles. Charlie is called into the hospital for an appointment and is told that he has cancer in his lymph nodes, known as Hodgkin's Disease. He is incredulous at first, but soon becomes quite morose at his condition. The doctor advises him to begin treatment as soon as possible, but he says he can't do it this week and leaves. Bailey returns to find that Sarah has prepared the apartment for her night with Elliot, complete with scented candles. Unable to stand being there any longer, Bailey leaves to continue his reading. Griffin visits his "business partner," Howard "Howie" Bester, to ask him for a loan so that he can maintain his bike shop while matching the prices of his competitor. Howie decides to lend him the money. While trying to read in a coffee shop, Bailey is approached by Annie, who is concerned since he missed the last few AA meetings. She was concerned about him, and Bailey realizes that this means that Annie cares about him. He confesses to her that he cares about her as well, and both of them realize they can't stop thinking about each other. Bailey believes they should reconsider their relationship, as it may not help them to stay sober in the end. Griffin puts aside time to talk to Julia and Zoe about the wedding planning. Charlie enters and confronts Zoe over contradicting Julia's ideas for the wedding reception, finally firing her in frustration. He rushes upstairs, concealing his tears, and then shares an emotional moment with Julia. Bailey and Annie end up sleeping together, and neither one regrets the decision. Howie visits Griffin and asks him to help him set up a secret bank account to hide money from the government. Griffin is uncomfortable at doing this, but Howie threatens to take back his loan if Griffin doesn't comply. Charlie reveals his condition to Kirsten, explaining that he doesn't want to tell the family until after the wedding. Bailey returns to the apartment the next morning and talks to Sarah. She reveals that she decided not to have sex with Elliot at the last second, believing that her life was changing too quickly. Bailey supports her decision. Nina returns from her trip and Charlie gives her a passionate embrace. Commercials deleted.
