DREW CAREY SHOW, THE: BROTHERHOOD OF MAN {FOURTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of comedies starring stand-up comedian Drew Carey as a single guy who attempts to juggle his romantic endeavors and his menial job at a Cleveland department store, while still maintaining his sense of humor. Oswald purchases a payphone in the belief that it could make him rich, while the others disagree. Drew is left alone in the store, since everyone else was given a paid vacation, and decides to use the opportunity to use the empty space to arrange a date with Sharon. However, they overhear his boss, Mr. Van Zandt, talking about his plans to demolish the store to make room for a parking lot, thus putting all its employees out of business. Drew goes to see the store's executives about this in opposition to their actions. Mr. Van Zandt responds by showing Drew security tapes demonstrating the incompetence of his co-workers, which influenced their decision to demolish the store. Furthermore, he views Drew as the only worthwhile employee there, and offers him a position as store manager of an outlet in Toledo if he keeps quiet about the demolition. If word got out, the executives fear that the union would get involved. Drew agrees, despite feeling that his fellow employees deserve to know about the impending layoffs. Much to everyone's surprise, Oswald's payphone scheme makes him a great deal of money. Drew tells his friends about the demolition and feels somewhat guilty about keeping that information from his co-workers until Larry comes by to boast about how Drew didn't get a vacation. Kate maintains that his co-workers don't deserve the truth, but an encounter with another one, Bernard, convinces Drew that there are decent people working in the store and that he must help them. He informs all of them about Mr. Van Zandt's scheme and reveals to him that he had the store declared a historical landmark since Theodore Roosevelt wrote his inaugural speech in it. However, Mr. Van Zandt already knew this and was prepared to make the "Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Parking Structure." Drew then tries to get Mr. Van Zandt to examine the potential impact of all the layoffs, and everyone breaks into a performance of "Brotherhood of Man" from "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," which seems to convince Mr. Van Zandt over to Drew's side. Includes commercials.
