KATE & ALLIE {KATE AND ALLIE}: DRESS TO KILL (TV)
Summary
One in this situation comedy series about Kate McArdle and Allie Lowell, two divorced mothers with conflicting lifestyles who, along with their children, share a New York City apartment.
In this episode, Kate waits at a dry-cleaning shop while a stain is taken out of her dress. She tells the owner, Mr. Rosenthal, that she prefers to wait since the dress isn't actually hers. While the garment is soaking, she describes to Mr. Rosenthal how the dress came into her possession and got stained. She recalls informing Allie about being invited to a performance of the Moscow Ballet's "Swan Lake" at Lincoln Center, subsequently explaining that a gown "to make jaws drop" is necessary to make an impression at the after-party. Telling about a beautiful $850 dress that she saw in a store window, Kate considers purchasing the dress, wearing it to the ballet, then returning it to the shop the next day. Allie impulsively buys the dress and encourages Kate to wear it to the event. Vladimir Zhevchencho, the ballet's manager and Kate's escort, is duly impressed upon seeing Kate in the dress.
Switching back to the present, Allie arrives at the dry-cleaning shop, at which point Mr. Rosenthal announces that most of the stains have been successfully removed. Kate reveals that the stains happened at the ballet's after-party when she stumbled into a ballerina and got the woman's makeup on the back of the garment. Kate and Allie then go home after Mr. Rosenthal assures them that the dress will be as good as new in the morning. Upon returning to the shop, Kate and Allie learn that the dress was accidentally given to another customer by Mr. Rosenthal's son-in-law. Obtaining the address of the man that picked up the dress, Kate and Allie are shocked to find themselves at a funeral home. They then discover that the dress was used to put on the corpse of the recently deceased Pamela Falkman.
When Allie and Kate approach the coffin, they are forced to give a speech about their "memories" of Pamela. Afterward, they tell the funeral director, Mr. O'Callaghan, about the mixup. They soon learn about Pamela's sad life and how mourners felt that she looked better than ever in the $850 dress. The two consider leaving the dress on Pamela, but when Mr. O'Callaghan agrees to the switch, Kate and Allie readily agree. The next day, they read Pamela's obit in the newspaper and decide against buying more designer dresses, despite an advertised sale. Commercials deleted
