WINNIE THE POOH: A VALENTINE FOR YOU {WITH WINNIE THE POOH: GROUNDPIGLET; MICKEY'S MOUSE WORKS} (TV)

Summary

An animated special featuring characters from the "Winnie-the-Pooh" children's books by A. A. Milne. Also includes the short Winnie the Pooh feature "Groundpiglet," as well as selections from "Mickey Mouse Works," a series of short cartoons depicting Mickey Mouse and his friends in various scenarios. "A Valentine for You" starts as Valentine's Day approaches and Pooh notices that Christopher Robin has been absent as of late. Pooh and the gang find Christopher Robin writing a Valentine's Day card to a girl he knows. They are distressed by this development, partially because they are not certain what a girl is, and Owl's attempts to explain ("Girls Are Like Boys") serve only to confuse them. They become convinced that Christopher Robin has been "smitten" with lovesickness, and that they must "un-smite" him by finding a "smitten" to affect him. They make an attempt to lure a "smitten" out of hiding, and Pooh finds a tiny glowing creature in his honey jar which they take to be the "smitten" they were searching for. They follow the "smitten" into an unknown part of the Hundred-Acre Wood and discuss what happens when one is "smitten" ("When the Love Bug Bites"). The glowing creature is found again and Pooh runs after it, managing to capture it in a jar. However, in their haste to catch the creature, Pooh and his friends have become separated and lost. They wander around for a time before Pooh lets the "smitten" out, and the light it emanates guides Pooh and his friends back together. They take the creature to Christopher Robin, who shows them the card he made for his girl friend. Pooh prepares to unleash the "smitten," but changes his mind and lets it go free. He says that Christopher Robin is happy the way he is and despite his personal misgivings, he doesn't want to change that. Pooh returns home dejected and finds a Valentine's Day card on his doorstep. Everyone else in the Hundred-Acre Wood also receives cards. Pooh goes to see Christopher Robin, who says that he delivered the cards. He thanks Christopher, but voices his concern that since Christopher has a new friend, he won't have time for Pooh and others anymore. Christopher assures him that isn't the case, that he'll always appreciate his friends in the Hundred-Acre Wood ("Places in the Heart"). In "Groundpiglet," Tigger's plans to ski are foiled when he realizes there is no snow, despite it being the first day of winter. He, Pooh, and Piglet consult Rabbit, who has the only calendar in the Hundred-Acre Wood. Rabbit informs them that it is actually February 2nd, Groundhog Day. He explains that if a groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. They set off to find a groundhog but cannot find one, so Rabbit dresses Piglet up as a groundhog and drops him into one of Gopher's holes. Piglet climbs back up, but his hat obscures his vision and he cannot see anything. Rabbit interprets this to mean that spring is coming, and everyone prepares accordingly. However, a heavy snowfall arrives, spoiling everyone's plans. Rabbit blames Piglet and yells at him for his faulty prediction. However, Rabbit soon discovers that Piglet is not to blame; his calendar was incorrect, and it is actually the middle of November. He goes to apologize to Piglet, but finds a note left by him: he has gone to find a real groundhog so that he can determine how long winter will last. Rabbit sets off in search of Piglet. Piglet finds no groundhog and decides to return home. However, Rabbit mistakes a lump of snow bearing Piglet's hat for Piglet himself, and believes Piglet was frozen solid. As he, Pooh, and Tigger desperately try to thaw out "Piglet," the real Piglet returns. Eventually they all straighten the matter out and Rabbit apologizes. "Mickey's Mouse Works" begins with "Pluto Gets the Paper," a short about Pluto's efforts to fetch a newspaper stuck to the sidewalk with a piece of chewing gum. In "Mickey's New Car," Mickey is taking Minnie out on a date, but experiences problems with his old, beat-up car. He decides to exchange it for a new car, which is highly advanced and boasts an enormous amount of features. Mickey soon finds himself overwhelmed by the car's uncontrollable features and eventually the car itself dumps Mickey on the side of the road and simply drives off by itself. Downcast, Mickey goes back to the car dealership to reclaim his old car, but finds it isn't there. However, Minnie arrives, having bought Mickey's old car. They ride off together to enjoy their date. Finally, in "Maestro Minnie," Minnie attempts to conduct an orchestra while dealing with unruly animate instruments. Includes commercials.
