NYPD BLUE: TOP GUM {SIXTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The sixth season premiere in this series of rough-edged police dramas about the cases and private lives of the detectives and station house personnel of a Manhattan precinct. In this episode, Simone experiences an odd dream about his old friend Patsy and then shares a romantic morning with Russell before heading off to a dentist appointment. The doctor, Davis, tentatively asks for his help in getting rid of his daughter's drug-dealing boyfriend, and Simone, apparently suffering the beginnings of a virus, agrees to look into the matter. He is then called to a crime scene at which 28-year-old Kevin Radner has been found dead, seemingly tortured for information. Kevin's wealthy father Mark suddenly arrives with his bodyguard/fixer, former detective Mike Roberts and raises eyebrows when he orders the detectives to "remember that he's the victim." Elsewhere, Russell and Kirkendall head to the hospital to question a rape victim, though the exhausted doctor tells them that it was a "false alarm" and that the girl has disappeared. Roberts tells Simone and Sipowicz that Mark was being blackmailed by a former student and alleged underage lover of Kevin's, Kenny Sorell, making him a very likely suspect.

Young Nina Nuñez arrives at the stationhouse and reveals herself to be the rape victim from the hospital, though Russell and Kirkendall are immediately suspicious of her story of being grabbed and chloroformed by a black stranger. Simone and Sipowicz track down Kenny, who slices Simone's arm with a knife upon capture, and Nina admits to Russell and Kirkendall that her assailant was actually her mother's boyfriend, Tony, who had been treating her with inappropriate attention before attempting to rape her. The detectives break the bad news to Ms. Nuñez, who immediately gives them Tony's location. Simone and Sipowicz demand an explanation from the patently intoxicated Kenny for the "unfortunate occurrence" at Kevin's apartment, noting that there was a message from Kenny on his answering machine, though Kenny claims that he merely needed a "loan" from his former friend. The detectives then learn that another man, Dino, has been spotted using Kevin's ATM card, and under their stern interrogation, he admits that he was Kenny's "lookout" and witnessed Kenny stabbing Kevin to death when Kevin refused to telephone Mark and demand a million dollars.

Tony demands the A.D.A.'s presence for his statement, and Costas, Russell and Kirkendall are amazed when he admits to the assault, brazenly declaring that Nina "tempted" him with her good looks and that he merely used the chloroform to calm her "nervous" feelings. Kenny eventually confesses to the murder, wildly declaring that he deserved the money and revealing that he invented the sexual angle just to rile Mark, and Mark is crushed to realize that he fell for the trick. Later, Sipowicz questions Simone about his health, though Simone dismisses it as a mere cold and then heads off to visit Reese, the dentist's daughter. He flatly tells her boyfriend Dan that he is bringing the wrong kind of "traffic" into the apartment with his drug-dealing and needs to reevaluate the "quality of life" in the building, and he hurriedly agrees to leave for good to avoid arrest. Simone then heads home, still having trouble breathing, but assures Russell that the matter will be cleared up with simple antibiotics. Includes commercials and promos.
