HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET: KELLERMAN, P.I. {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic police series about a department of reflective homicide detectives in Baltimore, Maryland. In the first half of this two-part episode, Falsone and Stivers are called to a motel, where a newborn infant has been found in a shallow grave. Elsewhere, former detective Mike Kellerman, now a private investigator, runs into Sheppard and makes a dinner date. Credit card charges at the motel lead the detectives to teenager Debbie Straub, and she shocks her well-to-do parents by admitting that she was pregnant by her boyfriend Craig Halpern and secretly gave birth to a stillborn infant at the motel. She states that Craig disposed of the baby, and when questioned, Craig sadly agrees that it was born dead. Griscom, however, states that the baby breathed outside of the womb before being smothered. Sheppard dines with Kellerman, who subtly tries to question her about the baby case, and when both teenagers refuse to change their story, Danvers admits that it will be hard to prove that they intentionally killed the infant.
Kellerman arrives at his old precinct and requests the case file, revealing that Debbie's parents have hired him to prove her innocence, but Gee firmly refuses to give him information. The others discuss their former colleague's transition to the "sleazy profession," while elsewhere Kellerman questions the motel maid and learns that she overheard Debbie telling Craig to "give it to me." Craig's mother opines that her son could not have ruthlessly murdered an infant, and Debbie's school friends admits that she and Craig were "obsessed" with one another. Falsone remains convinced that Debbie was the mastermind behind the killing, telling Ballard that women are generally "in charge" of their relationships, and Kellerman and Lewis have a tense encounter.
Kellerman tells the Straubs that Debbie will have to testify against Craig in order to save herself, as the evidence does not definitively prove his guilt, but Debbie maintains that she and her boyfriend must "protect each other." Danvers decides to try to scare the teens into confessing by assembling a grand jury and indicting them on manslaughter charges as adults and setting a high bail, and Kellerman urges the Straubs not to bail their daughter out right away, suggesting that a brief stay in prison will change her mind. Debbie and Craig are indicted and hauled apart in the courtroom, and Falsone butts heads with Kellerman, vowing to prove that Craig loved his son and gave in to Debbie's demands to kill him. Danvers' plan proves successful when a terrified Debbie phones her parents from jail, begging them to get her out and swearing that she will testify against Craig as the sole killer.
