ELLEN: WHEN ELLEN TALKS, PEOPLE LISTEN (TV)
Summary
The penultimate episode in this comedy series about the quirky misadventures of a flippant, former Los Angeles bookstore manager named Ellen Morgan. In this episode, Paige and Ellen depart a coffee shop as Paige complains that she cannot meet a nice guy in Los Angeles. They discover that Ellen's car has stalled, but are ignored by passersby when they ask for help. Ellen arrives late to work and quickly takes over from Chuck, asking her listeners why people are so isolated in their city and urging citizens to reach out to one another and be more friendly. She receives a great deal of positive feedback for her message, including several potential suitors for Paige, and she is pleased with the amount of influence she apparently wields over the people of L.A. Paige is saved from choking by a handsome man, Trevor, who also heard Ellen's show. Ellen begins interviewing a series of do-gooder types on air, including a Peace Corps volunteer and recycling fanatic Ed Begley Jr., though Chuck suggests that she is merely doing on-air plugs to get free stuff.
Paige and Trevor invite Ellen to dinner on their ten-day anniversary to thank her for bringing them together, but Paige admits that she is growing exasperated with Trevor's extreme niceness and non-stop altruism. Ellen fails to notice a homeless person as she encourages Paige to continue dating him, but they are both frustrated when they attempt to help a bratty teenage girl change a flat tire and accidentally cause a traffic accident when the spare rolls away. At work, Ellen becomes overwhelmed by her potential interviewees, whose causes start to conflict with one another's, and she learns that people are taking her "friendly" advice to extreme levels, particularly when she receives a call from a sweet old woman who offered to care for her neighbor's vicious dog, and begins to regret her message.
