SEINFELD: THE RACE (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series set in New York City in which comedian Jerry Seinfeld plays himself. Humorous situations in his personal life are interspersed with brief stand-up comedy routines.

In this episode, Jerry is disturbed to learn that the boss of his new girlfriend Lois is his old high school rival Duncan Meyer. Elsewhere, Elaine finds herself on a Chinese restaurant's "do not deliver" list because of her repeated complaints about incorrect orders. George observes that Elaine's new flame Ned reads the Daily Worker, a Communist newspaper. Meanwhile, Jerry tells Elaine about Duncan's decades-long grudge against him thanks to a "myth" that Jerry was the fastest kid in school, based on a race in which he accidentally got a head start. Duncan also tells Lois about the secret scandal, though Jerry chalks it up to sour grapes.

Elaine is fascinated when Ned confirms that he is indeed a Communist. George takes an interest in the Daily Worker's "appearance not important" personal ads, while elsewhere Kramer and his pal Mickey take jobs as a department store Santa and his elf. Duncan requests to hang out with Lois and Jerry together, and George offers to stage a fateful run-in with the group and back up Jerry's story about the race. George assures his Daily Worker match, Natalie, that he is busy "working for the people." Kramer begins to consider a new position when Ned points out the ways in which the department store is exploiting his labor.

George feigns amazement at running into "old friends" Jerry and Duncan at the coffee shop; after some slightly exaggerated tales about his successful career, he stresses that Jerry won the race fair and square. Duncan refuses to accept it, and Lois suggests a rematch to settle the score. Ned, refusing to accept Elaine's gift of "fancy shirts," is horrified to find that she has gotten him "blacklisted" at the Chinese restaurant by ordering under his name. Kramer gets both himself and Mickey fired when he begins telling the visiting kids about the "capitalist fat cats" at the store. Mr. Steinbrenner hears rumors of George's sympathies and sends him to Cuba to recruit some athletes. At the race, Duncan wryly promises Lois a huge raise and a trip to Hawaii if Jerry wins — but a well-timed car backfire gives Jerry another head start, and he wins the race again. In Cuba, George is forced to assure the dictator that he is "muy simpatico" to their views. Commercials deleted.
