NANNY, THE: AN AFFAIR TO DISMEMBER (TV)

Summary

One in this clash-of-cultures comedy series about Fran Fine, a flamboyant, wisecracking Jewish woman from Queens employed as a nanny by the upper-crust widower Maxwell Sheffield of Park Avenue. In this episode, Fran is bored with her life as a "hausfrau" and is unsure where she stands with Mr. Sheffield, forced to live vicariously through Maggie's teenage romance with Sean. Frustrated to hear that Maxwell is working late yet again, she is surprised by the arrival of his dashing brother Nigel, who spots "a yearning" in her and takes her out for a night on the town. The two flirt as they spend the night dancing, and Fran marvels at his dissimilarity from his stuffy brother. In the morning, Fran's good mood is improved even further when Nigel surprises her with flowers and jewelry, though she hides the affair from Maxwell, leading Nigel to wonder if she feels as though she is "cheating" on him. She denies it, and Nigel then declares his love for her and asks her to elope with him, asking her to meet him at midnight as he departs New York on the Queen Elizabeth 2.

Fran frets over her decision and consults Val, who thinks Nigel's grand gesture is romantic. Maggie, unaware, talks to Fran about Sean, and Fran encourages her to "follow her heart," wondering how she herself is to do the same. She admits to Sylvia that she is tired of waiting for Maxwell to be ready for her, and she eventually decides to go with Nigel after all, sadly leaving behind a letter for Maxwell and reflecting on their happy times together. A series of mishaps prevent her from reaching the pier on time, however, and she makes it there just in time to see the QE2 leaving, realizing that she was not "meant to be" on the ship. She returns to the Sheffields' home and steals the letter back, and Maxwell kindly tends to her twisted ankle as she realizes that she prefers their imperfect relationship to a whirlwind romance after all. Commercials deleted.
