NANNY, THE: WHERE'S THE PEARLS? (TV)
Summary
One in this clash-of-cultures comedy series about Fran Fine, a flamboyant, wisecracking Jewish woman from Queens employed as a nanny by the upper-crust widower Maxwell Sheffield of Park Avenue. In this episode, C.C. and Maxwell try to distract Fran with an errand so she will not attempt to horn in when Maxwell meets with one of his many famous associates: Elizabeth Taylor. However, Fran sees through the ruse, and though she promises to behave herself, she outwits Niles and greets Elizabeth excitedly when she arrives. They chat briefly about Fran’s marital status and about Elizabeth’s impressive career before Fran discovers her mother Sylvia hiding in the coat closet, desperate to meet her idol. Maxwell arrives, somewhat annoyed by Fran’s shenanigans, accompanied by C.C., who is more than slightly flustered by the Hollywood legend’s presence. Elizabeth asks Fran to call a bonded courier to transport a stunning set of black pearls that she plans to wear in an advertisement for her new fragrance, but Fran decides that a courier is not secure enough and opts to deliver the jewelry herself. She and her mother leave—after retrieving Yetta from the closet as well.
Fran takes a cab and gets into a conversation with the feisty driver, who is having boyfriend problems. Fran mentions her “girlfriend” Elizabeth Taylor, and the cab driver is so distracted that the get into an accident and Fran is knocked out. At the hospital, Yetta, Sylvia and the Sheffields wait for news, and soon learn that Fran is experiencing amnesia and has forgotten who she is, although C.C. is far more concerned with the missing pearls. Fran at first believes herself to be Elizabeth Taylor, and then mistakes Maxwell and the children for her own family, pleased to have done so well for herself. Back at home, she surprises her “husband” in the bath, and he vainly attempts to explain that she is in fact his nanny as Niles looks on in amusement. At breakfast, Fran questions why they are not romantically involved after knowing each other for so long, and Maxwell cannot answer. Sylvia comes by to help Fran regain her memory, and she finally recalls who she is—and remembers that she left the pearls in the cab, much to Maxwell’s frustration. Commercials deleted.
(Taylor appeared in all four CBS comedies on this evening, including "Can't Hurry Love," "Murphy Brown" [see ACCNUM 125145] and "High Society.")
