STEVE HARVEY SHOW, THE: DON'T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a former funk musician who returns to his old high school as a music teacher.

Bullethead has to deal with bullying from DeAndre, who insults him by implying that he is stupid and poor. Steve is assigned by the mentoring program to look after Romeo due to his poor grades and seeming lack of aspirations in life. He recommends that he join the school choir, although Romeo dismisses it as “corny.” However, he changes his mind when Steve points out that the choir is mostly female, appealing to Romeo’s desire to meet women. Romeo arrives late for practice just as Steve announces that they have been invited back to the all-city Choir competition. Steve is horrified when he discovers that Romeo has no singing ability whatsoever, and is severely hampering the choir’s performance. He becomes extremely frustrated and disappointed in Romeo’s lack of progress. Meanwhile, Cedric serves as Bullethead’s mentor, and he asks Cedric for advice on how to deal with DeAndre. Cedric and Steve believe his problem is one of confidence, and try to help him improve his demeanor. They do this by suggesting that he put on a tough-guy attitude and send a bevvy of insults to DeAndre. Meanwhile, Regina becomes frustrated that Lovita doesn’t seem to respect her as a colleague, and that she is not conducting herself in a “professional” manner. Lovita apologizes and promises to improve her behavior.

Steve confronts Romeo about the choir, but finds that Romeo truly appreciates being in it and that his parents intend to come see him in the choir competition. Romeo does not realize that he is a terrible singer and Steve doesn’t have the heart to tell him to his face. However, Romeo overhears Steve talking about his lack of talent to Aisha, who is also in the choir, and becomes dismayed. That night, Romeo arrives at his apartment and confronts him about his dishonesty. Steve says he was motivated by a desire to avoid hurting Romeo’s feelings, but Romeo is upset and announces he is leaving the choir, and that he no longer wants Steve as his mentor. Bullethead attempts to follow Cedric’s advice about dealing with DeAndre, insulting him in front of his friends. He seems to be successful, but Cedric pulls him aside and compliments him on his newfound skill at taunting. Aisha and (some other guy) approach Steve and ask him to get Romeo back in the choir, as they feel that his presence makes it “cool.” Regina defends Lovita when a deliveryman insults her during an argument. Lovita appreciates her assistance, particularly since she did not raise her voice or resort to violence. Steve manages to incorporate Romeo back into the choir by utilizing his talent for rap music, arranging rap solos for him during the choir’s regular numbers. This results in a much improved sound and morale for the entire choir. Commercials deleted.
