WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, THE: TOY STORY (TV)

Summary

One in this series of family programs. presented under the umbrella title "The Wonderful World of Disney," hosted by Michael Eisner, chief executive officer of Disney. This program showcases the Academy Award-winning animated film which tells the story of a rivalry within a group of toys that come to life when their young owner is away. Eisner opens the program by briefly discussing the company's forty-three-year history and then introducing its first computer-animated film.

The story begins as young Andy plays with his toys, creating a scene in which Sheriff Woody, his beloved pull-string cowboy doll, saves the townspeople from a bank robber, portrayed by Mr. Potato Head. When Andy leaves, the toys stir and assemble for a "staff meeting" at which Woody, the leader, reveals that Andy's birthday party has been moved up to that day, as the family is relocating to a new home the following week. All of the toys panic, worried that Andy will receive gifts that will replace them. Woody sends the army men downstairs to spy on the party and keep them updated about the presents via walkie-talkie. They listen nervously as Andy receives board games and other non-threatening gifts. However, they fail to hear details about one final, exciting gift, and all rush back to their "places" as Andy and his friends run upstairs and deposit the cool new toy on Andy's bed, in Woody's usual spot.

Andy's new toy is revealed to be a Buzz Lightyear spaceman action figure, and when he comes to life, it is immediately apparent that he believes himself to be a real astronaut of the Star Command fleet who has landed on a strange new "planet." The other toys greet him eagerly, and everyone except Woody is impressed with his high-tech accessories, including a pair of wings. Woody scoffs at the idea that he can fly, but Buzz proves that he can, sort of. Woody grows upset over the next several days as Andy plays with Buzz all the time, fearful that he has been replaced as the favorite, especially when Andy inscribes his name on the bottom of Buzz's foot. Buzz attempts to repair his "rocket" and Woody mocks him for his "professional" spaceman persona. However, they are distracted by the antics of Sid, the sadistic young boy next door who enjoys blowing up toys. Andy's mom suggests a trip to Pizza Planet and Woody hopes to be chosen to accompany his young friend; he ends up accidentally knocking Buzz out of the window in his haste to hide him from Andy's view. The other toys are appalled, but Andy takes Woody along and Buzz, outside in the yard, jumps into the car as well. Woody is greatly relieved to see Buzz, but Buzz is furious at Woody's attempt to "terminate" him. They fall out of the car and are left behind as they fight. Woody panics, exasperated with Buzz's ignorance of being a "child's plaything." He spots a Pizza Planet delivery truck and jumps inside to get back to Andy, convincing Buzz to accompany him into the "spaceship."

Buzz is enthralled by the outer space-themed restaurant and strays into a crane game machine, inhabited by three-eyed alien toys who worship "the claw." When Woody tries to recover him, they are both captured and taken home by the devious Sid. Woody is terrified as he witnesses Sid mutilating his sister's doll. He is further scared by Sid's many "mutant" toys, believing they are cannibals. Elsewhere, Andy is upset to find that Woody is now missing as well. Woody fights to escape Sid's clutches, but as Buzz assists him, he spots a TV ad for Buzz Lightyear toys and is stunned to realize that he is simply a mass-marketed action figure after all. When he makes one last desperate attempt to truly fly, he falls and breaks his arm off, and is confiscated by Sid's sister Hannah. Woody rescues an addled Buzz, who is distraught over being a "sham," from a strange tea party, and calls across the yard to his friends in Andy's room for help. They believe that he is still plotting against Buzz, however, and refuse to help. Woody then realizes that Sid's creepy toys are in fact friendly as they help reattach Buzz's arm. Sid then receives an enormous rocket in the mail and decides to blow Buzz up the following day. Buzz is still depressed over his identity crisis, but Woody convinces him that he is a very cool toy and has earned Andy's priceless love. Buzz resolves to escape with Woody after all.

The following day, Andy's moving truck arrives and Woody recruits Sid's toys' help as Sid takes Buzz outside, strapped to the rocket. Woody and the others stage a daring escape through the dog door. Woody "breaks the rules" and speaks to Sid directly as his other toys surround him threateningly, ordering him to "play nice" for once, scaring the boy out of his wits. Woody and Buzz then chase after the moving van as it drives off, and Buzz saves Woody from Sid's fearsome dog, but is left behind in the street. Woody makes it into the van and sends RC, the remote-controlled car, after Buzz, but the other toys misunderstand Woody's intentions and toss him out of the truck. Buzz catches Woody on the car and they speed toward the truck, narrowly avoiding traffic, and Woody saves the day by lighting the rocket. Buzz "falls with style" again as they shoot into the air, and they fall neatly into the car beside a jubilant Andy. Months later, Andy celebrates Christmas with his family at his new home, and Mr. Potato Head is thrilled when Andy's sister receives a "Mrs. Potato Head." Elsewhere, Woody gets an affectionate holiday greeting from Bo Peep, the comely figurine on Andy's sister's lamp. Sporting an ear-to-ear grin, Woody then goes to talk with his buddy Buzz, who smiles when looking at the lipstick kisses Bo Peep left all over Woody's face. Woody and Buzz subsequently wonder about what toys Andy will receive—and are shocked when he is gifted with a puppy. Includes commercials and promos, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the film's production and animation process ("The Secret World of Toy Story").
