STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE: THE SEARCH {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of science fiction programs about a twenty-fourth-century space station, Deep Space Nine. Continued from B:50221. Odo confronts the shapeshifters, who claim that the planet they are on is his home. They momentarily meld together, filling Odo with wonder and emotion. Meanwhile, Sisko and Bashir drift through space on a shuttlecraft, having escaped the wrecked Defiant. They are found by Dax and O’Brien, who have been looking for them so they can take them back to Deep Space Nine. The female shapeshifter explains to Odo that they have always been wary of non-shapeshifting humanoids, or “solids.” Kira wants to contact Sisko but the shapeshifter will not allow it. She encourages Odo to assume the forms of flora and fauna in order to understand them better. Kira plans to contact Sisko anyway, masking her signal so as not to arouse suspicion. Back on Deep Space Nine, Sisko arrives and finds Admiral Nechayev there, who reports that the Federation and other major powers of the Alpha Quadrant are negotiating a peace agreement with the Dominion. Dax and O’Brien were able to reach the Founders and easily convince them of the need for such an agreement. One Founder introduces himself to Sisko as Borath; he is the same race as Eris. Borath is looking forward to an alliance between the Federation and the Dominion. Bashir catches up with Garak, who is wary of the peace talks. T’Rul furiously informs both of them that the Romulans have been excluded from negotiations for unknown reasons. She promises war if the treaty goes through without Romulan support. Kira cannot transmit her signal due to an unknown interference coming from a mysterious subterranean power source. Odo talks to her; he has tried his hand at shapechanging for hours, but it has not altered his perspective. Sisko meets with Admiral Nechayev about the exclusion of the Romulans from the peace talks. She claims the Founders requested their exclusion and that the Romulans would be ineffectual against a Federation-Dominion alliance. The female shapechanger refers to her people as “changelings” and relates their history to Odo: they were once spacefarers who were hunted down and attacked due to fear of their abilities. The changelings eventually came to rest on their planet, where they have lived in peace ever since. Odo was one of several of the changelings sent out to explore the galaxy for them, being genetically compelled to eventually return. Odo is the first to return; the two of them meld their forms into a single mass in order to “link” to one another. Kira cannot find Odo anymore, believing he is lost to the other changelings. She locates the source of the interference: a mysterious door that she cannot scan past. On Deep Space Nine, a Jem’Hadar soldier attacks O’Brien and Bashir without provocation. Eddington breaks it up but takes no action against the Jem’Hadar, much to Bashir’s anger. Sisko soon finds out about the incident and that Dax is being transferred without his permission. Furious, he confronts Admiral Nechayev and Borath about the changes. She informs him that the Federation is pulling out of that sector of space, giving both Deep Space Nine and Bajor over to the Dominion. When Sisko protests, she informs him that the treaty has already been signed. Odo visits Kira; he is beginning to “understand” the forms he takes and wishes to stay with his people. She asks for his help deciphering the mystery of the door. Garak meets with Sisko; they discuss a rumor that Bajor has allied itself with the Romulans in opposition to the Dominion. Both Sisko and Garak have been locked out by their leaders. T’Rul comes running frantically in, chased by Jem’Hadar. She is shot in the back and in the ensuing fight Sisko is knocked unconscious. Bashir, Dax, and Garak free Sisko from Eddington’s custody. With O’Brien’s help, they plan to take a runabout loaded with photon torpedoes and collapse the wormhole, preventing the Dominion from using it to reach the Alpha Quadrant. They fight their way through Jem’Hadar soldiers and are forced to leave Garak behind when he is shot. They board the runabout and fire their torpedoes at it. Meanwhile, Odo opens the door to find himself greeted by Jem’Hadar. He and Kira are led into a cave, where they find the crew of the Defiant unconscious on a series of slabs, watched over by Borath. Borath informs them that the minds of the Defiant crew are inside a simulation as part of an “experiment” to gauge Federation reaction to a potential Dominion invasion. The female shapeshifter arrives and informs them that she was behind the whole thing. Odo and Kira realize that the changelings are, in fact, the Founders. The female Founder claims that the Dominion was established to bring order to a chaotic galaxy and ensure that no race could ever harm them again. Odo is appalled by the Founders’ actions and demands that the Defiant crew be released or they will have to place him in the simulation as well. Unwilling to harm another changeling, the female Founder releases the Defiant crew. Sisko and his companions awaken from the simulation, confused. They are released, but the female Founder promises retribution in the future. Odo shares some last words with her; she claims he will not find happiness among the “solids” but Odo disagrees. The episode ends as Odo and Kira hold hands and beam back aboard the Defiant. Commercials deleted. This program is closed-captioned.
