LAW & ORDER {LAW AND ORDER}: TURNAROUND {PART 2 OF 3} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas that deals with the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of criminals. The first half of each episode concerns the police procedure that leads to the arrest of a suspect, while the second half covers the efforts of the district attorney to prosecute the case. In the second episode of this three-part arc, a young boy finds a short sword, known as a barong, in a field in Islip, and it is soon determined to be the murder weapon used on Heidi Ellison. Briscoe and Curtis wonder if the indicted suspect, Evan Grant, could have made it from Islip to New Paltz in time to establish his alibi, and Briscoe questions Curtis about his potential romance with the attractive Lisa. They end up tracking down another Hollywood bigwig, Steven Berger, who admits that Eddie Newman was indeed in New York on the day of the murder and hastily flew to California on Berger's private plane, and Ross, looking for a motive, questions Evan again. Evan confirms that Eddie was controlling and violent towards Heidi, and Ross angrily chastises Lt. Miller for never formally charging the so-called "very contrite" Eddie with domestic abuse.

The detectives find a vast quantity of drugs, mostly prescribed by Dr. Duvall, in Eddie's apartment, and Briscoe and Curtis are forced to fly back to L.A. when blood is found in his car, though upon arriving they learn that Eddie has conveniently checked into rehab for a ten-day program. They quickly arrest him and prepare to head back to New York, though his lawyers contest the extradition order and are granted five extra days. Angered by this, Schiff dispatches McCoy and Ross to California as well, and McCoy argues that the arrest warrant is built on sufficient probable cause. Gorton tells the press that the blood evidence was planted in Eddie's car, and though Curtis seems to enjoy his time with Lisa, he gently turns down her offers of a high-paying consultant job and of further intimacy with her, much to Briscoe's ongoing bafflement. The detectives soon learn that Miller was at the garage with Eddie's car, meaning that he may have planted the evidence after all, though his prints are not found anywhere.

Dr. Parks testifies about the fiber evidence in the car and Gorton continues pointing the finger at Miller, suggesting that Heidi promised him a movie role as well and then changed her mind, prompting him to kill her in anger. Eddie admits to hitting Heidi in the past, and when an angered McCoy accuses Judge Van Ness of "usurping the authority" of the New York justice system by trying to hold the trial in California, the judge denies the extradition warrant and fines McCoy for contempt. Momentarily defeated, McCoy and Ross resolve to find more usable evidence, and another passenger on Berger's plane, Frank Cooper, admits that Eddie was "very jumpy" on the flight and repeatedly visited the bathroom. McCoy finally acquires his probable cause when blood matching Heidi's type and a distinctive ring of hers are found in the airplane bathroom's pipes, and Eddie is extradited to New York. Gorton maintains Eddie's innocence, informing Ross that his client passed a polygraph test, but Eddie is sent to Rikers and Miller is suspended. Ross quickly withdraws the charges against Evan, though Heidi's parents cause a scene in the courtroom by loudly declaring that he is guilty and Eddie innocent. Eddie's polygraph is leaked to the press as well and Schiff is furious to realize that Gorton is likely behind it all, though Ross experiences anger of a different kind when she learns that Gorton violated their custody agreement and took their daughter Katie home with him.
