FRASIER: AN AFFAIR TO FORGET (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Frasier Crane, a divorced psychiatrist who lives in Seattle and hosts a phone-in radio show. Frasier receives a call on his radio show from a German woman named Gretchen who suspects her husband, a fencing instructor, of carrying on an affair with a wealthy new student. Roz interrupts the call to offer some advice to Gretchen; a test to determine her husband's affections. Gretchen decides to take her advice and Frasier is annoyed that Roz interrupted his show. Roz tries to get Frasier to set up his father on a blind date with her neighbor. Frasier finds Martin and Niles constructing a model ship together and Niles remarks how Maris has recently taken up fencing with a Bavarian instructor named Gunnar. His remarks cause Frasier to suspect that Maris is the woman having the affair with Gretchen's husband and Frasier speaks to Martin in private about it. Martin believes it's a coincidence and Frasier considers it. Martin also rejects Roz's proposal for a blind date. Gretchen calls back and offers further evidence of her husband's infidelity. Frasier panics when he learns that Gretchen's husband is Gunnar, rekindling his suspicions that this man is having an affair with Maris. Gretchen reads a love-letter written to the other woman, and the description seems to match that of Maris's. After he advises Gretchen to confront her husband about the matter, Frasier keeps cutting to commercial and Roz is curious as to why Frasier is getting worked up over the call. He attempts to hide her identity, but Roz soon figures out that the other woman is Maris. Later Frasier tries to confront Maris about it while she's inside her sensory deprivation tank. When she doesn't respond to his accusations he rips the tank lid off, only to find Niles there instead. Later, Niles arrives at Frasier's place, disheveled and highly upset. He explains that he went to confront Maris but turned back at the last second and drove off. Frasier tries to offer comfort and advice, but once he is out of earshot Martin urges Niles to assert himself to Gunnar, hoping that it will convince Maris to come back to him. Niles decides to do so and immediately returns to his home, where he finds Gunnar waiting in the living room. Frasier follows close behind as Niles angrily redresses Gunnar; Frasier points out that the gesture is pointless since Gunnar doesn't understand English. Niles and Frasier discover that Niles's maid Marta speaks German, so they use her to translate Niles's grievance. Gunnar takes offense and soon he and Niles are engaged in a swordfight with foils. Eventually Niles ends up cornered and defeated, but Gunnar misunderstood their accusations and soon Frasier and Marta clear things up for him. Gunnar reveals that he did pursue Maris but she rejected him because of her love for Niles. Niles is relieved and runs off to find Maris. The episode ends as a mistranslated remark from Frasier draws Gunnar's ire. Commercials deleted.
