DOUG'S SECRET CHRISTMAS (TV)

Summary

One in this animated series of children's programs about the adventures of Doug Funnie -- a good-hearted eleven-year-old boy with a hyperactive imagination -- and his friends and neighbors. Christmas is approaching and Doug discusses the various Christmas traditions practiced by the people of Bluffington. His own family practices several standard Christmas traditions, such as putting up a big tree, stringing up Christmas lights, etc. However, this year's Christmas is different since his mother is eight months pregnant. Doug's father pulls him aside to try to talk to him about it, and tries to let Doug know that their Christmas traditions will have to be scaled back this year. A misunderstanding ensues when Doug's parents mistake his Christmas list for baby name ideas, and Judy makes fun of his attempts to conceal this fact. The next day, Doug takes a look around a Christmas tree lot on the way home from school, but returns home to find that his father has set up a small fake Christmas tree instead, much to his dismay. His parents are busy preparing for the baby, but Doug is undeterred in his desire to celebrate Christmas. After the last day of school before Christmas break, Doug and Skeeter do some last-minute Christmas shopping. Doug helps Skeeter pay for a Christmas tree-shaped waffle iron for his father, but leaves himself broke and unable to buy a present for Patti. He instead decides to make her a pair of ear-shaped earrings. He gives them to Patti and she seems to like them. She gives Doug a present in return but asks him not to open it until Christmas day. Doug observes everyone else in town celebrating Christmas and fantasizes about having an "old-fashioned" Christmas with his family. He returns home to find that there is still little in the way of holiday festivities due to his mother not feeling well. Doug is upset that he has been denied the chance to celebrate Christmas in the way to which he is accustomed, and is determined to celebrate anyway, holding a "secret Christmas" in his room with Porkchop. He soon becomes frustrated that no one is around to share Christmas with him. However, he soon discovers that the rest of the house is empty. He receives a call from his father at the hospital and rushes there. It turns out that his mother gave birth earlier than expected, and Doug now has a baby sister. Much to his surprise, his parents have used his and Judy's "suggestions" for names, thus naming the baby Cleopatra "Dirtbike" Funnie. The Funnie family manages to hold Christmas a few days late, but Doug is satisfied with the results. Patti gets him to open his present: a scarf which she knitted for him despite her distaste for knitting. The episode ends as Doug runs out to get more diapers for Dirtbike, wishing everyone within earshot a merry Christmas. Includes commercials.
