ROSEANNE: HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Roseanne and Dan Conner, a working-class couple who live in Lanford, Illinois, and their three kids, D. J., Darlene, and Becky. In this episode, the family prepares for Dan's return from California, where he has been for some time caring for his ill mother, but a mix-up with time zones causes Dan to surprise them all at the front door. The family greets him happily, and Roseanne tells him about her holiday shopping, more extravagant this year since the family's lottery win. She suggests that she and Dan take a trip alone together, but he seems distant and uninterested. Later, the family brings home a Christmas tree, and Jackie asks Roseanne about her "reunion" with her husband the night before as they prepare rum balls, but Roseanne can only express her "sappy" feelings about him, adding that she has an exceptionally good present for him. Dan and the boys struggle to accommodate the oversized tree, and they decorate it all together, also preparing cookies for Santa's arrival. When Roseanne leaves the room, however, her kids help themselves to the snack. The family then exchanges gifts, and Dan becomes emotional when Roseanne presents him with a copy of their mortgage and a lighter: they can now destroy it, as they have paid off their home. Later, Jackie overhears Dan on the phone expressing warm feelings towards someone and assumes he is talking to his mother, but when she realizes that it is someone else, she begins to suspect that he is having an affair.
