PEYTON PLACE {RODNEY IS ARRAIGNED FOR JOE'S MURDER; LESLIE RETURNS} (TV)
Summary
One in this nighttime serial drama about the residents of a New England town, based on the novel by Grace Metalious. In this episode, Allison watches as Rodney is arraigned and charged with Joe's murder. He pleads not guilty and Judge Webber refuses to grant him bail, though Dowell protests that he is not a flight risk. Rodney and Norman are surprised to see that their father Leslie has returned from Europe, and Norman explains that Rodney fought with Joe in order to get him, Norman, "off the hook" in regards to their quarrel about Rita. Allison visits her mother at the bookstore, observing that her situation with Joe parallels that of Constance and Elliot, and Constance tells her about the "private agony" of raising her alone during Elliot's trial and conviction. Anna mourns her son and Stella begs Michael to stay in the house to distract her from her grief, and when Stella begins to give in to her own sadness, Gus sternly reminds her that they must focus on "getting even" with Rodney. Michael soon leaves for the hospital and asks Stella to consider working as his assistant if needed.
Steven meets up with Betty at the Colonial Post Inn and, noting that she did not attend the arraignment, asks if she is still in love with Rodney, to which she answers uncertainly. He reveals that Leslie has returned and asks Betty about her actions on the night of Joe's death, and she explains that a distressed Rodney called for an ambulance from the wharf and that she went to check on him afterwards, adding that she now trusts Steven fully. Leslie finds Judge Webber and questions him about his decision to remand Rodney to prison, observing that it "seems harsh." Webber explains that he is merely following protocol, and Leslie resolves to appeal his decision. Commercials deleted.
