DEAN MARTIN COMEDY HOUR, THE {TED KNIGHT, MONTY HALL} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy/musical variety shows hosted by actor/crooner Dean Martin, also known as “The Dean Martin Show.” In this episode, Martin and pianist Ken Lane finish up a song and chat about their pal Frank Sinatra, and are soon interrupted by a drunken man, played by Foster Brooks, who explains that he wants to have a quick drink before heading off to work—as an airline pilot. Martin then attempts to serenade a young woman, but she is uninterested, and he sings “Just Say I Love Her.” In the next sketch, Martin and Gene Kelly appear as news anchors, reporting on a story of a nudist wedding attended by many famous names, including President Nixon.

The all-girl singing group The Golddiggers then performs “You Are My Sunshine” along with Martin and Kelly, and then sings “Banjo Man” accompanied by Doug Dillard of the bluegrass band The Dillards. Martin performs “Honey,” followed by The Golddiggers’ rendition of “Open Up Your Heart,” and the entire group finishes with “You Can Count On Me” from “On the Town.”

In the next sketch, Martin and Ted Knight portray a doctor and a patient at a hospital at which the patient, a Mrs. Cynthia Green, accidentally received a most unwanted sex-change operation. In the following scene, Knight plays a man in need of women’s undergarments for a theatre role who recruits a friend, Martin, to do the embarrassing shopping for him, leading to a series of misunderstandings with the saleswoman, played by Audrey Meadows.

Martin and Kelly then perform “The Birth of the Blues,” followed by “Blue Skies,” during which Kelly tap-dances. The final segment is the “Man of the Week” roast; this episode’s “honoree” is Monty Hall, host of the game show “Let’s Make a Deal.” The “roasters” include: Martin, TV host Bert Parks, Meadows, boxer Rocky Graziano, actor Donald O’Connor, Kelly, Indiana senator Birch Bayh, TV personality Art Linkletter, and comedian Jack Carter, who all tease Hall about his Canadian heritage, his game show and other idiosyncrasies. Hall then takes the podium himself to return the favor to his assorted friends and associates. Includes commercials.
