TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {BURT REYNOLDS, RICHARD LEWIS, DOM DELUISE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are actor Burt Reynolds and comedian Richard Lewis, with a special appearance by Dom DeLuise.
In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: bandleader Doc Severinsen's uncharacteristically subdued wardrobe; Burbank's new "restaurant row"; President Ronald Reagan's optimism about the "mild" economic recession, which is also affecting Hollywood; the approach of Valentine's Day; the nominations for the upcoming Academy Awards, for which Carson will serve as host for the fourth time; former Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter's trip to Hawaii; and the retirement of Pittsburgh Steeler "Mean" Joe Greene.
Reynolds takes the stage and, as it is his 46th birthday, is serenaded by the audience. He then discusses his nervousness during his first "Tonight Show" visit in 1971; his recent "unglamorous" hernia operation; his post-surgery trip to Hawaii, where he struggled to maintain his manly image while undergoing a painful root canal; and his new film "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" (1982) alongside Dolly Parton. Carson then introduces a series of outtakes and behind-the-scenes peeks from his recent film "Sharkey's Machine" (1981).
Next, Carson surprises Reynolds with a comedic "This is Your Life"-style exploration of his life and career thus far, joking about his past "odd jobs" and early roles. Reynolds' "manservant" Ivar – actually his good pal DeLuise – arrives and offers some insider gossip about his so-called "great physique." Carson also brings out an oversized cake and, in response to Reynolds' many comments about his interest in fatherhood, a random young child.
Lewis then performs a stand-up routine, touching on such topics as: his overbearing mother's many phone calls; visiting his troublemaking New Jersey family; the perils of recovering one's car after it has been towed in New York City; Angelenos' dramatic reaction to rainfall; and his many vehicular accidents and unpleasant trips to the DMV. Includes commercials and promos.
