GOLDIE HAWN SPECIAL, THE {GEORGE BURNS, JOHN RITTER, SHAUN CASSIDY, HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS} (TV)
Summary
This televised comedy-musical special is hosted by Goldie Hawn. The program begins as Hawn talks about her childhood and her feelings of being unusual, and she takes the stage to sing "Nobody Does It Like Me." After previewing her special guests, she discusses designing her own home during her pregnancy and a few details of her personal life and tastes, then singing "We're All Alone." She joins the Harlem Globetrotters for a game of basketball, though they make their unfavorable opinions about "Short People" clear to her. Hawn then explains that she has been absent from television for six years but has made a number of pictures with notable leading men, then introducing George Burns, who descends onto the stage and joins Hawn for some banter, during which he compares her to his sidekick Gracie Allen, and a dance to "Tea for Two." After he leaves, Hawn ponders the fun of the 1960s, then singing "Yesterday" in remembrance of better times. She notes that the country's loss of innocence was explored in the "crazy" new music of Bob Dylan and the Beatles, among others, and talks about her start as a go-go girl at the Peppermint Lounge. She and her backup performers then dance to a medley of popular songs, including "Land of 1,000 Dances," "The Twist," "Cool Jerk," "Dancin' in the Street" and "Penny Lane," in between which Hawn discusses her early dreams of being a secretary and eventual decision to pursue dance, closing with "Yesterday" again.
Next, she welcomes "Three's Company" star John Ritter, briefly discussing his "shocking" show and then singing "Hooray for Hollywood" and "The Hollywood Square Dance." They also perform a number of short skits featuring Ritter and Hawn as a director and his overexcited young actress delivering an impassioned monologue about feminism, a reporter and a movie star in a disaster film, a married man on a date with another woman, and two actors attempting to present an award at a show. After this, Hawn introduces Shaun Cassidy, who sings "Do You Believe in Magic" and then chats with Hawn, singing "Tonight You Belong to Me" together and sharing a dance. Hawn closes the program by thanking her guests and reciting a poem about kids who feel "different," as she did as a child, and then reprising "Nobody Does It Like Me." Commercials deleted.
