TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {WHOOPI GOLDBERG, JERRY SEINFELD, THE CHIEFTAINS} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are actress Whoopi Goldberg, comedian Jerry Seinfeld and musical group The Chieftains. In his opening monologue, Carson comments on the following topics, among others: the possible return of the "Hong Kong flu," which caused a pandemic in 1968; his encounter with an unusual NBC staff doctor; Mickey Mouse's sixtieth birthday; Bob Dole and George Bush's "war of words" and somewhat boring personal debate styles; Presidential hopeful Gary Hart's "stunning statement" and severely underfunded campaign; Russia's curious shoe-polish purchase; and the possibility of a syndicated marriage-counseling program headed by notorious Christian celebrity couple Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker.

Carson then talks with McMahon about some popular product slogans, like KFC's "finger-lickin' good," that have been lost in translation in foreign countries, and he offers a few "translations" of other famous company names and phrases of his own creation.

The first guest, Goldberg, then joins Carson onstage and discusses the following: her tardy arrival, thanks to L.A.'s notorious traffic; her recent experience performing in Las Vegas for the first time and dealing with drunken and newly-bankrupt fans; the dangers of gambling; the challenges of living in one's own home without a landlord for basic maintenance; whether her non-famous husband David Claessen is threatened by her celebrity; her fear of flying; and some flirtatious words for Doc Severinsen.

Next, Seinfeld performs a stand-up routine in which he comments on the following: his dislike of flying and the not-so-astute airport security workers; the pointlessness of trying to "save time" in one's daily life; his love of films despite being "movie-impaired" and frequently confused by plots; and a remarkable television news story about a moose. Seinfeld then briefly chats with Carson about his life as a bachelor.

The Chieftains then perform "Dans Mod Koh a Vaod" from their album "Celtic Wedding," followed by a Chinese-inspired tune, "Full of Joy." Includes commercials and promos.
