STAR TREK: VOYAGER: INVESTIGATIONS (TV)
Summary
One in this series of programs about the outer space adventures of the USS Voyager and its commander, Captain Kathryn Janeway, in the twenty-fourth century.
Neelix starts a ship-wide viewscreen program, "A Briefing with Neelix," promising various segments and entertainments. Kim recommends that Neelix pursue more journalistic programming. Neelix gets a communication from his old Talaxian friend Laxeth; he is surprised to learn that Laxeth's convoy plan to pick up a member of the Voyager crew. Neelix asks Janeway, who confirms that Tom Paris has decided to leave the ship due to his recent friction with other members of the crew. Paris claims to Neelix that he never truly fit in on Voyager and wants to live life according to his own rules. Meanwhile, the Doctor continually asks Neelix to be allowed on his show for a segment of his own, but Neelix keeps postponing it for various reasons.
Neelix gives a tribute to Paris on his show just before he is transported off of Voyager. While trying to pick a replacement for Paris, Michael Jonas reports from engineering that the ship's plasma stream is malfunctioning. He and Torres work to correct the problem; Jonas is burned by an exploding console but Torres manages to get the ship out of imminent danger. Neelix insists on interviewing the burn victims in sick bay. The accident renders the ship's warp drive inoperable, and Janeway asks Neelix to determine where they might find the proper material to replace it. The Talaxian convoy reports that the Kazon attacked them and, oddly, captured nothing except Tom Paris.
Paris is taken aboard a Kazon vessel and confronted by Seska, now heavily pregnant with what she claims is Chakotay's child. She wants Paris to join her and give her information on Voyager, but he refuses to comply. When she leaves, Paris plants a device on a Kazon console and starts hacking into it. Back on Voyager, Janeway insists on continuing their mission without Paris. Neelix is highly suspicious of the Kazon's attack on the convoy and comes to the conclusion that someone on Voyager was providing them with information. He decides to conduct a journalistic investigation of the matter, beginning with an examination of the ship's communication logs. He discovers blank spots in the log database where they appear to have been erased. Jonas attempts to sneak up behind Neelix and kill him with a laser cutter, but he is inadvertently saved via the Doctor's timely intervention.
Neelix brings his findings to Tuvok. He doesn't completely believe Neelix but decides the matter merits further investigation. He asks Neelix to drop his investigation, as it is a matter of ship's security. However, Neelix continues regardless of Tuvok's order. With Hogan's help, Neelix discovers that the deleted logs were carefully disguised amongst background radiation and delivered via unconventional methods. Neelix secretly uses Hogan's authorization to access Paris's old console, and comes to believe that Paris was the traitor aboard Voyager. He reports his findings on his viewscreen program and is called into Janeway's ready room because of it.
Janeway reveals the truth: that Paris discovered some time ago that a spy for the Kazon was aboard Voyager and agreed to be part of an intricate plan to root him out. To that end, he acted insubordinate and rude to his fellow crew members, particularly Chakotay, in order to provide a plausible alibi as to why he would want to leave the ship. Thus he would be able to infiltrate the Kazon and discover the traitor's identity. Chakotay was not in on the plan and, upon being told, is rather upset. Tuvok intends to use Neelix falsely accusing Paris on his show to their advantage and Janeway orders him to continue his investigation while using his communication badge as an audio feed to Tuvok and his security forces.
Meanwhile, on the Kazon ship, Paris discovers that Jonas is the traitor. The Kazon plan to ambush Voyager while they attempt to repair their warp core. Seska attempts to kill him but Paris manages to effect an escape, stealing a shuttle and heading back to Voyager. Voyager detects Paris's approach and Janeway orders Jonas to reconfigure the transporter to beam him aboard. Neelix notices Jonas is actually disabling weapons and attempts to stop him, but Jonas knocks out Neelix and takes his badge. Paris manages to tell Janeway that Jonas is the traitor and she sends security to apprehend him. Paris is beamed off the shuttle at the last second. Neelix awakens and fights Jonas. During the struggle, Jonas is sent careening to his death. Weapons are restored and Voyager disables the Kazon vessel. The episode ends as Paris appears on "A Briefing with Neelix" and apologizes for his antagonism towards the crew, citing it as part of the plan to root out the ship's traitor. Commercials deleted.
