ROD SERLING'S NIGHT GALLERY: RARE OBJECTS (TV)
Summary
One in this supernatural anthology series hosted by Rod Serling.
The episode begins as August “Auggie” Kolodney, a racketeer, eats dinner alone in a restaurant empty of all people save himself and Blockman, the waiter. Kolodney soon realizes he has been set up and narrowly escapes an attempt on his life, sustaining a bullet injury in the process. He returns to see his girlfriend, Molly Mitchell, with whom he was supposed to be having dinner that night. He accuses her of being in on the assassination attempt against him and orders her to get out of his sight. Kolodney then calls his right-hand man Tony, who summons a doctor to attend to his injuries.
The doctor recommends that Kolodney “retire” but he feels he cannot due to his many enemies. The doctor gives him the name and address of someone he says will “help [him] survive.” Kolodney goes to the address, finding a large mansion inhabited by a man named Dr. Glendon. Dr. Glendon shows Kolodney his extensive art collection and asks him some questions about his life. Despite Kolodney’s half-truths, Dr. Glendon seems to know everything about Kolodney, including the extent of his racketeering. In return for absolute safety and comfort, Dr. Glendon asks for all of Kolodney’s assets. He notes that Kolodney has been the target of many assassination attempts and may be the subject of another one soon.
Kolodney becomes weak and drowsy from wine that Dr. Glendon has drugged. Dr. Glendon explains that the drug is of his own invention and slows the aging process to a virtual standstill, creating a sort of “fountain of youth.” He takes Kolodney into a secret wing of his house, where he keeps the prizes of his “collection:” famous missing people throughout history such as the Grand Duchess Anastasia, Adolf Hitler, and Amelia Earhart, all of them preserved through Dr. Glendon’s drug. Kolodney is horrified to find that he is the latest addition to Dr. Glendon’s “collection.” Commercials deleted.
