FAMILY MATTERS: TO BE OR NOT TO BE {PART 1 OF 2} {SEASON SIX PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about the Winslows, an African-American family living in Chicago next door to their annoying neighbor, Steve Urkel.

Urkel, while out on a date with Myra at a fancy restaurant, accidentally causes and then puts out a minor fire. He reveals to her that he has been perfecting his transformation chamber, and now believes that he will be able to assume the identity of Stefan permanently. Myra states that Urkel is fine the way he is, and is upset at the explanation that he is changing in order to attract Laura, thus leaving her behind. He notes that he warned her that this might happen, but she is devastated and hoped she could change his mind. Myra runs out in tears and Urkel chases after her. Harriette notices that Carl is having vision problems and difficulty reading and suggests that he get glasses, although he denies that there is anything wrong with him. Urkel and Laura prepare his transformation chamber, but Myra enters and tries to halt the procedure. She begs him to remain as he is instead of transforming, but he does not listen to her; he mentions that he will need to re-enter the transformation chamber on a weekly basis to maintain his new form. He transforms into Stefan and Laura is immediately smitten, much to Myra’s disgust.

Carl’s vision problems continue to plague him when he and Harriette go out to dinner together. He continues to insist that he does not need glasses, even after an attempt to read his menu accidentally lights it on fire. At home, Eddie believes that Carl’s reluctance to get glasses is due to his fears that it would an admission that he is getting older. He then points out that Urkel’s transformation into Stefan improved his vision, making glasses unnecessary for him. Myra sneaks into the basement and tampers with the transformation chamber just as Stefan leads Carl down there. She is unable to stop the procedure before Carl enters and it has a reverse effect on him, making him Urkel-like in his appearance and mannerisms. Includes commercials.
