BOY MEETS WORLD: PAIRING OFF (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about teenager Cory Matthews, who balances his theories on life and friendship against those of his off-the-wall Philadelphia-based family. In this episode, Cory and Shawn are awed to find that students are pairing off into romantic couple all over school, and Cory decides that he too wants “a girl who’s like a friend.” He appeals to Topanga, but she turns him down in the interest of their friendship. The boys are then distracted by an attractive substitute health teacher, and Shawn attempts some “21 Jump Street”-inspired flirting, but he and Cory are both humbled when forced to reveal how little they know about human reproduction. Later, they see even Mr. Turner and Feeny chatting with women, and Shawn shows Cory his patented hair-flip that gets girls’ attention, although Cory cannot quite master it. Eric brings a young lady named Rebecca home to “study,” and Cory, after deciding he would rather focus on his schoolwork than on the mystery of girls, walks in on them kissing in their parents’ bedroom. Rebecca quickly leaves, and Eric angrily rounds on Cory for ruining his chances, but Cory threatens to tattle and demands advice from Eric. Eric tells him to maintain eye contact and convince a girl of his interest, although he does not necessarily need to have any, and essentially flatter his way into her good graces. Next day, in Mr. Turner’s class, Cory attempts to follow Eric’s advice, and though he misses the day’s lesson, he manages to score a date with a pretty fellow student. At home, Alan and Amy find Rebecca’s earring on their bed and immediately guess what happened, although Alan cannot hide his slight pride at his son’s accomplishment. When they confront Eric, he assures them that nothing untoward happened, but Cory makes things worse by telling them about Eric’s questionable advice, adding that it worked for him, although he does not know his date’s name. Alan and Amy suggest that their sons get to know girls a little better before moving forward, and the next day at school, Cory talks with the girl and they agree to take things slow, and she tells him that her name is Wendy. Later, Eric asks Cory about his “date,” and ends up being the one to ask his brother for tips this time. Includes commercials.
