FAMILY MATTERS: TO BE OR NOT TO BE {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about the Winslows, an African-American family living in Chicago next door to their annoying neighbor, Steve Urkel.

Stefan realizes that due to the interrupted transformation, Carl is “half-nerd, half-Carl,” resulting in a disjointed schism of behavior. Stefan vows to fix the machine, but requires parts and time in order to rewire it. He tries to tell Harriette the news, although she believes he is merely doing an impression of Urkel. He cannot control himself, and Harriette is concerned about the alterations made to him. His family is unable to cope with the new Carl, as he is just as off-putting and clumsy as Urkel but insists on going about his life and going to work. Stefan tries to repair the chamber, but his new form is not as intelligent as Urkel, which slows his progress. Carl proves to be helpful due to his “nerd” form, although his behavior is somewhat disruptive and Stefan throws him out of the laboratory.

The machine is finally repaired and Harriette brings Carl down to get changed back into his old self. Carl emerges, dazed but otherwise normal. He decides that Harriette is right and he should get glasses, and that he “need[s] to look like [him]self.” Through seeing Carl, Stefan comes to appreciate the uniqueness of Urkel and realizes that he is not being true to himself. Later, he goes out on a date with Laura and tells her about his revelation concerning loving oneself. He calls his Stefan identity “artificial” and says he cannot stand to deceive himself and others any longer, and that he has decided to change back into Urkel. Laura protests, but Stefan insists that this is the only way he can live with himself. He notes that he did not “recharge” in his transformation chamber, and he starts to assume Urkel’s form before her eyes, causing a ruckus by accident. He leaves and Laura is given a photograph of her and Stefan; she believes that he will return someday. Includes commercials.
