ESCAPE FROM JUPITER {EPISODE 4} (TV)
Summary
One in this Australian miniseries about a group of children -- Michael, Kumiko, Kingston, and brother and sister Gerard and Anna -- and their parents trying to make their way from Jupiter's moon, Io, to Earth after a volcanic eruption destroys their mining colony. In this episode, the kids spy on the proceedings as Duffy and the others attempt to measure the approaching lava, but when Kingston and Anna damage a food machine, he scolds the children for being "non-productive" and in the way. When they request to help, he sets them to restocking the infirmary, but Michael and Kumiko eavesdrop and hear Professor Ingasole telling Duffy that the colony is still in danger and evacuation is needed, suggesting the abandoned KO-5 station as a new home. The kids debate the matter and Gerard remains convinced that they will soon be saved and that the explosives used to redirect the lava will work, but the others worry that Ingasole is right and that they have only 48 hours left. Ingasole explains that they can "improvise" and figure out how to survive on KO-5, and Kumiko breaks into Duffy's office and downloads the latest information about the lava while the others stand guard.
Sam declares the information to be inconclusive, but he and Ingasole plan to examine KO-5 all the same. He tells Michael and Kumiko to stay put, but they sneak aboard anyway, and Duffy is furious when he learns of the unauthorized takeoff. Upon learning definitively that the lava's flow is in fact uncontrolled and the colony is in grave danger, however, he changes his tune and urges Sam and Ingasole to reboot the derelict space station. When they arrive at KO-5, they discover that it is sealed up and inaccessible except through the garbage chute, so Michael and Kumiko don space suits and crawl through the small space into the craft. Kumiko, who is knowledgeable about computers, hurries to find the control room and return the station to a functional state before time runs out. She and Michael encounter several difficulties, but they are eventually successful and everyone is relieved, particularly Duffy. Commercials deleted.
