MYSTERY!: INSPECTOR MORSE, SERIES 4: DECEIVED BY FLIGHT {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
Part two of two. One in this mystery anthology series. Host Diana Rigg introduces this program about a crotchety, middle-aged, ale-drinking British police inspector. In part two, Morse and Marshall discuss the injured Lewis and conclude that he can still play in the match the following day. Morse tells Kate what has happened, and she asks to attend the match with him, but he declines because of the investigation. He also refuses to allow her to “tag along” as he works on the bookstore bombing case, but they resolve to meet up later. Before the match, Lewis dodges questions about his injury, and another player notices that someone has tampered with his locker, suggesting that the criminal is in their midst. As the game gets underway, Philippa calls Foster and updates him, and then joins Morse, who admits that he has no real interest in the sport, much to her disapproval. He shows her the Zen book, although she does not recognize it, and they share a flirtatious moment before Kate suddenly arrives and seems upset by the situation. Morse then meets the successful Jamie, who says that he flew in from Hong Kong purely for the match. The game continues, and Lewis does well, but Foster is suddenly discovered dead in the locker room, having been stabbed with scissors. Philippa, distraught, admits to Morse that Foster was her “colleague,” not her husband. Russell arrives and determines that Foster was killed when everyone suspect was out on the pitch, which frustrates Morse. He talks with Lewis and reveals that Philippa is in fact a customs officer working on a long-term drugs bust, and that Foster was her boss. He tells Lewis that whoever attacked him was really aiming for Foster, and then goes to question the Clarets. He refuses to allow them to leave, but Marshall protests that they are departing for a tour the next day.
Philippa explains that large shipments of cocaine and heroin have been coming into Britain for some time, and that Foster eventually tracked the pattern of arrivals to the Oxford event and the match. Morse decides that the cricketers should be allowed to depart on the tour as scheduled so as not to arouse the criminals’ suspicion, and he tells Marshall that Donn and Foster were killed because of a personal romantic entanglement with Philippa, saying that Donn alluded to such problems when they met the night before he died. Lewis suggests that they check the suspects’ phone record, and Morse continually returns to the Zen book, believing that it contains a clue. He calls Kate and then goes to see her, saying that he could not reach her the previous night when they were supposed to meet, and he tries to work out the suspicious miscommunication with the phone numbers before offering to drive her to the train station to return to London for work. Later, however, he finds a similar book with a romantic message, and when he observes Kate at the train station, he sees her sharing an intimate moment with none other than Cranston. Elsewhere, the cricketers depart for Dover, and Philippa is frustrated when their bus is found not to contain any drugs, meaning that they are being smuggled via another method.
Morse learns that Jamie plans to return to Asia soon for work, and soon begins to put together the pieces of his frequent travel and the patterns of the drug trade. He quickly chases after Lewis, who is assisting Marshall, and dramatically reveals that Marshall is hiding the drugs in his wheelchair. Cranston is hauled off for questioning about his part in the crimes, but Marshall is unapologetic. They capture Jamie as well, and Morse arrives at Kate’s workplace, where she is discussing the bookstore bombing on her radio show, and pronounces her under arrest for the murder of her husband. He then explains to Lewis that he realized that the Zen book came from Cranston, with whom Kate was having an affair. She killed her husband when he refused to accept her leaving him, Morse concludes, and Jamie killed Foster because of his investigation into the drugs trade. He plays several phone messages that support his theories and, the case solved, Morse and Lewis retire to watch the rest of the cricket. Commercials deleted.
