MTV 10 {MTV TENTH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL} (TV)

Summary

This special features clips, conversations and musical performances to celebrate the tenth anniversary of MTV, which launched on Aug. 1, 1981.

Actor Tom Cruise offers opening remarks and introduces singer George Michael, who performs "Freedom! '90." Mel Gibson introduces Aerosmith, who performs "Dream On" from Boston, and a series of brief animations depict some of the channel's most popular artists' "Previous Lives." Cher explains that the Video Vanguard Award, presented annually to artists for their achievements in music and film, has been renamed in honor of legendary artist Michael Jackson, and Madonna, who received the award in 1986, performs a filmed black-and-white monologue of sorts addressing MTV directly, and wishing the network a happy anniversary.

Director Spike Lee discusses the cultural importance of "Yo! MTV Raps"; and a series of artists including Run DMC, Kool Moe Dee, LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Heavy D, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa, Ice-T, Fab 5 Freddy perform an oral history piece with lyrics by A Tribe Called Quest. Teenagers around the world offers their thoughts on MTV's social impact, and actress Kim Basinger introduces her fellow Georgians R.E.M., who perform "Losing My Religion." Finally, Michael Jackson and special guest Slash perform the new singles "Black or White" and "Will You Be There." Includes commercials and promos.
