GROWING PAINS: SECOND CHANCE (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about reporter Maggie Seaver and her psychiatrist husband Jason Seaver, who works in his Long Island home to keep an eye on their children.. Carol has a new boyfriend, a college student named Sandy, whom she seems quite attached to. After their date they make out on the Seaver’s porch and refer to each other as girlfriend and boyfriend for the first time. He invites her to a luncheon the next day and she accepts, despite the fact that it conflicts with a family brunch. Despite returning home late, Carol finds that her parents have stayed up for her return and gets Carol to talk about her night, although she doesn’t tell them that she and Sandy went to a bar for their date. Carol convinces Maggie to let her go to the luncheon with Sandy. The next day the Seavers return from their luncheon to find Carol still there; Sandy has not yet called. She gets a call from Sandy’s roommate saying he was in a car accident the previous night and is now in the hospital. Carol, Maggie, and Jason go to visit him and Carol manages to convince the attending nurse to let her visit. Sandy is in traction and is still injured, but seems to be stable for the moment. He is in good humor despite his injuries. He reveals that the police are charging him with drunk driving and Carol is upset at this revelation. She says he should consider himself lucky and that he has a “second chance.” Carol meets her parents in the waiting room, where she confesses that she and Sandy were at a bar and drank the previous night. They are upset but relieved because they know it could have been worse. When the three of them return home, Mike announces that he heard from the hospital: Sandy just died minutes ago from internal hemorrhaging stemming from his injuries. Carol is inconsolable, wondering where Sandy’s “second chance” went. The episode ends with a message about drunk-driving-related deaths. Commercials deleted.
